About The Position

Under general supervision, ensures prompt, safe, and accurate preparation and dispensing of medications to both inpatient and outpatient care areas. Reviews and verifies physician orders to ensure appropriate therapy. Provides drug information to medical staff, nursing, and patients. Supervises pharmacy technicians, interns, externs, and pharmacy assistants in accordance with hospital policy.

Requirements

  • Licensed Pharmacist in the State of Mississippi.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of unit‑dose drug distribution systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of IV admixture systems preferred.
  • Experience with drug information, pharmacotherapeutics, total parenteral nutrition, and drug literature evaluation preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Dispense outpatient medications including discharge prescriptions, emergency department, hospice, nursing home, workers’ compensation, and employee prescriptions.
  • Provide patient counseling for dispensed medications.
  • Verify and dispense inpatient medications utilizing the unit dose system.
  • Review patient profiles for allergies, interactions, duplications, age‑specific considerations, and appropriate dosing.
  • Enter and verify physician medication orders.
  • Monitor food‑drug and age‑specific interactions.
  • Check medications prepared by technicians for accuracy prior to dispensing.
  • Verify accuracy of floor stock and emergency medications.
  • Ensure height, weight, and allergy data are documented for all patients.
  • Review, verify, and dispense IV admixtures including TPN and chemotherapy preparations.
  • Review laboratory values prior to IV preparation and contact prescribers when adjustments are needed.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of chemotherapy waste and controlled substances.
  • Supervise technician activities related to medication preparation and dispensing.
  • Participate in drug therapy education for pharmacists, technicians, interns, physicians, nurses, patients, and the community.
  • Monitor medication inventory and ensure timely procurement from primary and secondary sources.
  • Participate in hospital interdisciplinary teams as requested.
  • Adhere to all hospital and departmental policies including attendance, infection control, safety, and education requirements.
  • Perform additional pharmacy‑related duties as assigned by the Director of Pharmacy.
