About The Position

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. This role involves reviewing and dispensing medications, providing drug information and counseling to patients and providers, and overseeing pharmacy support personnel. The pharmacist will work in either a retail/community or a medical center/institutional setting, utilizing technology and adhering to all regulations governing pharmacy practice. Pharmacy services may include involvement in various specialized areas such as acute care surgery, neurology, cardiology, pediatrics, oncology, infusion services, intensive care, general medicine, dialysis, transplant, antimicrobial stewardship, and medication reconciliation. Duties can range from unit dose dispensing and IV admixtures to outpatient prescriptions, compounding, and working with automated dispensing devices. The pharmacist must be able to assess the pharmaceutical needs of patients across all age groups and demonstrate good communication skills.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • Thorough knowledge of drugs and their actions.
  • Knowledge of state and local regulations.
  • License must be in good standing by the State Board of Pharmacy in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges as required by position.

Responsibilities

  • Review prescriptions to assure accuracy, to ascertain the needed ingredients, and to evaluate their suitability.
  • Provide information and advice regarding drug interactions, side effects, dosage, and proper medication storage.
  • Review, interpret, and dispense both prescription and non-prescription medication to patients.
  • Respond to prescription issues and advise providers on the selection, dosage, interaction, and side effects of medications.
  • Counsel patients on medication prescriptions, including proper administration, possible side effects, expected response, and storage.
  • Monitor the health and progress of patients in response to drug therapy.
  • Learn and utilize new technology as the profession of pharmacy evolves.
  • Provide oversight and clinical supervision for pharmacy services and pharmacy support personnel.
  • Review and interpret provider orders in a medical center or institutional setting.
  • Assist in problem-solving and provide other aspects of pharmaceutical care in a medical center or institutional setting.
  • Perform unit dose dispensing, IV Admixtures, outpatient prescriptions, navigate the electronic medical record, compounding, and work with automated dispensing devices.
  • Utilize appropriate age-related patient information to assess the pharmaceutical needs of patients, including neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Follow all established regulations and standards that govern the practice of pharmacy.
  • Act as a shift supervisor under direct or indirect supervision by department managers (may be required).
  • Demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills.
  • May include decentralized clinical functions, such as direct patient interaction/interdisciplinary team rounding, chart reviews, customer or patient counseling, collecting accurate medication list.
  • May also include centralized clinical functions, such as checking and dispensing medications and overseeing the clinical functions of the IV room.
