About The Position

The Staff Pharmacist plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, effective, and evidence-based use of medications across all patient care areas. This position is responsible for verifying and dispensing prescriptions, overseeing sterile compounding processes, and providing clinical consultation to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. The pharmacist actively participates in interdisciplinary care planning, supports medication safety initiatives, and ensures compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards. Additionally, the role contributes to continuous quality improvement, staff education, and the advancement of pharmacy practice within the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science degree from an accredited school of pharmacy required
  • Minimum 2 years of experience required
  • Registered Pharmacist License to practice pharmacy in the State of Texas
  • Sterile Pharmaceutical Compounding Certification
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) required
  • Computer literate
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Must have good ethics
  • Ability to perform arithmetic computations, measurements, and conversions

Nice To Haves

  • Doctorate degree preferred
  • Acute care experience preferred
  • Experience verifying physician’s electronic medications orders
  • Proficiency in MS Office products preferred
  • Familiarity with Pyxis, CPSI

Responsibilities

  • Reviews/verifies physician orders for accuracy, appropriateness (dose, route, frequency), allergy and potential interactions for Pre-op/PACU/Step down/inpatient setting; provides drug information and therapeutic recommendations to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Follows policies and procedures; prioritizes workflow to ensure quality of services; must work within scope of practice.
  • Supports clinical services (i.e. medication reconciliation, assists with antibiotic weight-based dosing/monitoring, pediatric weight-based dosing.
  • Assists with ordering or receiving narcotics from wholesaler. Performs retrospective review as part of daily narcotic auditing.
  • Troubleshoots pharmacy and nursing CPSI issues (e.g., when medications won't scan correctly) as well as Pyxis issues when they arise.
  • Maintains electronic physician order sets (adds or removes medications upon physician request).
  • Compounds low and medium risk sterile preparations or performs the end product checking of the sterile preparations compounded by technicians.
  • Performs daily/weekly/monthly audits of narcotic usage and audits of medication dispensing machines to ensure proper dispensing and documentation.
  • Works in compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements; keeps current with NRAC, as well as new trends and procedures; maintains appropriate records and statistics; prepares reports and correspondence as necessary.
  • Provides Medication safety presentation at Nursing Orientation as scheduled. Assists with pharmacy staff and/or nursing staff training as needed.
  • On-call service, attends all Code events while on duty.
