About The Position

The UT Southwestern Medical Center PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Programs are in the process of obtaining ASHP accreditation. The PGY2 Program is a one year post graduate training with experienced preceptors to prepare pharmacist to work in health systems. The Residency Program will typically accept two candidates into the PGY2 programs and each resident will have an area of specialty for their program (e.g. Critical Care, Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL)). Residents will select elective rotations to meet their professional goals in addition to the orientation to pharmacy operations and practice related to required advanced experiences in clinical and administrative practice sites. After training in the areas related to their program's specialty, residents should possess the advanced knowledge and skills needed to enable them to practice at the highest level of their doctorate degrees and possibly obtain specialist or management level positions upon program completion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) degree or PhD Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an American College of Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE) accredited school of pharmacy is required.
  • Must be participating in, or have completed, an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program or one in the ASHP accreditation process (i.e., one with candidate or preliminary accreditation status) or be approved by ASHP to interview for a PGY2 position through the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Exemption Process.
  • REGISTERED PHARMACIST (RPH) within 90 Days
  • STERILE COMPOUNDING (IV) CERT (ACPE-IV)
  • ADV CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT (ACLS) course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA). within 90 Days
  • BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Responsibilities

  • Performs job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies, procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental/infection control standards as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Communicates drug information (verbally/in writing) to physicians, nurses, etc. in a courteous and professional manner. Assists in patient/family education and counseling regarding drug therapy and side effects. Also, effectively documents clinical activities, demonstrating cost savings and concisely conveying key information required for follow-up by fellow pharmacists. Strives to improve patient satisfaction, as measured by Press Ganey scores.
  • Participate in the education of pharmacy and medical students, interns, and residents.
  • Read journals and attend presentations and inservices on a regular basis in order to maintain a current knowledge of new therapies, drugs and theories in patient care.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues as needed to enhance high quality and efficient patient care.
  • Prepare and deliver informal and formal presentations to a variety of groups. Residents will be expected to complete at least one formal ACPE accredited continuing education topic each year for the pharmacy department.
  • Support and demonstrate a customer services commitment to internal and external customers through adherence to UT Southwestern Medical Center's customer service standards and processes.
  • Staff on-line as a pharmacist as scheduled and needed to optimize patient care. Reviews medication orders for therapeutic appropriateness, duplications, interactions, overall effectiveness & safety. Seeks clarification if necessary & documents interventions (i.e., ADR). Performs therapeutic monitoring of specified drug therapies & recommends dosage adjustments as needed based on renal function evaluation & pharmacokinetic calculations.
  • Participate in the medication use evaluation (MUE) process to assist the hospital in optimizing drug therapy.
  • Identify and report medication errors as well as participate in error investigation to enhance patient safety.
  • Achieve the overall goals of the residency program, of each individual learning experience. Seek feedback on individual performance & make active use of the constructive feedback provided by residency program preceptors. Completion of a final written report in an accepted manuscript style. Presentation of obtained results prior to completion of the program.
  • Duties performed may include one or more of the following core functions: a) Directly interacting with or caring for patients; b) Directly interacting with or caring for human-subjects research participants; c) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting patient records (including patient financial records); or d) Regularly maintaining, modifying, releasing or similarly affecting human-subjects research records.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
