About The Position

The Narcotic Pharmacist is responsible for dispensing, receiving, and monitoring all controlled drugs. Responsible for reviewing all controlled drug activity to ensure compliance with federal and state law(s) and monitoring controlled drug discrepancies. This role involves managing controlled drug distribution and returns for Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) within the hospital and Ambulatory Surgical Center, maintaining separate Controlled Substance Manager (CSM) inventories, and processing daily transactions for refills and stock outs. The pharmacist will also process controlled drug returns, report and research all controlled substance discrepancies, and monitor controlled drug inventory through scheduled inventories and audits. Additionally, the role may involve performing general pharmacist duties as needed and on scheduled holidays, acting with professionalism, urgency, and ownership, and maintaining excellent customer service.

Requirements

  • 2 years of professional experience requiring the use of narcotic substance knowledge.
  • Degree from US accredited School of Pharmacy in Pharmacy.
  • Pharmacist Licensure from the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy.

Responsibilities

  • Dispensing, receiving, and monitoring all controlled drugs.
  • Reviewing all controlled drug activity for compliance with federal and state laws.
  • Monitoring controlled drug discrepancies and seeking resolutions.
  • Managing controlled drug distribution and returns for Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) within the hospital and Ambulatory Surgical Center.
  • Maintaining and managing two separate Controlled Substance Manager (CSM) inventories.
  • Performing transactions to send new loads, stock outs, manual requests, and ADC controlled drug refills daily.
  • Processing controlled drug returns, including outdated medications, empty return bins, unloaded medications, and medications without removal.
  • Generating and reviewing Controlled Substance reports daily.
  • Notifying patient care directors of unresolved controlled substance discrepancies and submitting Incident reports.
  • Notifying the pharmacy manager of trends with unresolved discrepancies.
  • Performing scheduled inventories of each compartment of the CSM to ensure narcotics are in date and removing expired or broken items.
  • Reviewing inventory and placing weekly CII and CIII-CV orders.
  • Receiving, verifying, and adding controlled drugs into CSM.
  • Routinely performing controlled substance audits throughout the hospital and Ambulatory Surgical Center.
  • Performing duties of a pharmacist as needed and on scheduled holidays.
  • Acting with professionalism, urgency, and ownership.
  • Maintaining good customer service, including answering phones within the first 3 rings, responding to door buzzers promptly, and following up with internal customers in a timely manner.
