The PGY1 pharmacy resident is a pharmacist in training who provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care through integrated drug distribution, clinical services, and teaching. The resident completes a one-year PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program that builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education to develop the knowledge and skills needed for direct patient care, practice management, leadership, critical thinking, communication, and teaching. Structured around the four competency areas required by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)—patient care, advancing practice and improving patient care, leadership and management, and teaching, education, and dissemination of knowledge—the program offers a well-rounded selection of rotations and prepares residents to provide comprehensive patient care, pursue board certification in pharmacotherapy, and seek additional specialized training.
