About The Position

The PGY1 pharmacy resident is a pharmacist in training who provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care through integrated drug distribution, clinical services, and teaching. The resident completes a one-year PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program that builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education to develop the knowledge and skills needed for direct patient care, practice management, leadership, critical thinking, communication, and teaching. Structured around the four competency areas required by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)—patient care, advancing practice and improving patient care, leadership and management, and teaching, education, and dissemination of knowledge—the program offers a well-rounded selection of rotations and prepares residents to provide comprehensive patient care, pursue board certification in pharmacotherapy, and seek additional specialized training.

Requirements

  • Residents must have a PharmD from an American College of Pharmacy Education accredited college of pharmacy.
  • Residents must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Commonwealth of Massachusetts Pharmacy Intern license at start of employment (if not already licensed pharmacist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts).
  • Residents must commit to twelve months of training and understand that the program is a full-time practice commitment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical review of medication orders from prescribers throughout the hospital including Emergency room, Critical Care unit, Pediatrics and Medical Surgical units.
  • Intervene and provide recommendations to providers for drug dosing errors, drug interactions, allergies or drug contraindications.
  • Suggest appropriate or alternate drug therapy to the clinical team when needed.
  • Responsible for oversight of verification, preparation, and distribution of medication orders.
  • Responsible for ensuring medications contain the correct labeling and drug components.
  • Responsible for oversight of Sterile, Non-Sterile and Hazardous compounds and ensures adherence to Pharmacy policies.
  • Responsible for reviewing patient medication profiles and monitoring clinical parameters to ensure the proper choice of drug, dosage form, dose, length of therapy and interaction potential of the prescribed drug.
  • The resident will review and complete Pharmacy algorithms for antibiotic dosing and Pharmacy drug interchanges for medications not on Formulary.
  • Participate in Multidisciplinary rounds throughout the resident’s clinical rotations as appropriate.
  • Maintain clinical relationship with providers.
  • Review patient clinical records and makes appropriate recommendations when needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining a working knowledge of, and conforming to legal requirements concerning the distribution of drugs, as well as good working knowledge of recent developments in the field of pharmacy.
  • Completes yearly competencies assigned by the hospital.
  • Responsible for the distribution, control and record keeping of all controlled substances.
  • Participates in weekly inventories of controlled substances when needed.
  • Provide education for the South Shore Health professional staff (i.e. pharmacists, physicians, advanced-practice clinicians, and nurses).
  • Participate in periodic reviews of therapeutic classes of drugs and present findings to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Prepare and present to the appropriate committees’ evidence-based reviews of drugs requested for formulary addition.
  • Initiate and facilitate completion of drug use evaluations.
  • Develop, implement, and participate in a residency project over the course of the year.
