About The Position

Battelle is seeking a PFAS LC-MS/MS Analyst for a full-time position at its Norwell Analytical Chemistry Services Laboratory in Norwell, Massachusetts. The laboratory specializes in non-routine and complex environmental chemistry analyses for government and industrial clients. This role supports high-complexity PFAS analyses using EPA Methods 1633A, 533, and 537.1 and contributes to defensible environmental data for decision-making. The analyst performs PFAS analyses across environmental and drinking water matrices in a regulated, quality-driven laboratory environment. The position requires technical independence and attention to data quality, method compliance, contamination control, and project schedules. The analyst also supports method optimization and troubleshooting, prepares and evaluates analytical data, and communicates technical or quality risks to supervisors or project managers.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Chemistry or a related field.
  • 10 years of analytical laboratory experience, including trace-level environmental analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with LC-MS/MS PFAS analysis, including isotope dilution techniques and ultra-trace quantitation.
  • Strong working knowledge of EPA Methods 1633A, 533, and/or 537.1, including QC requirements, acceptance criteria, and contamination control practices.
  • Experience working in a regulated, quality-system laboratory environment producing legally and scientifically defensible data.
  • Must be a sole U.S. Citizen.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience analyzing PFAS in non-routine or complex matrices such as wastewater, leachate, soil, or biosolids.
  • Familiarity with PFAS method development or multi-method PFAS program support.

Responsibilities

  • Perform PFAS sample analysis in environmental and drinking water matrices using LC-MS/MS in accordance with EPA Methods 1633A, 533, and 537.1, including aqueous, solid, and complex matrices as applicable.
  • Generate complete, audit-defensible PFAS data packages, including qualitative and quantitative evaluation, QC summaries, and narrative documentation of deviations, troubleshooting, or corrective actions.
  • Review analytical data for compliance with method acceptance criteria; evaluate accuracy, precision, recovery, and interference; and identify potential contamination or system-derived PFAS issues.
  • Support method optimization, validation activities, and technical problem-solving related to PFAS analysis, matrix complexity, and evolving regulatory requirements.
  • Execute and document method-required QC elements, including ICV/CCV, laboratory control samples (LCS), matrix spikes (MS/MSD), surrogates, internal standard performance, and field and laboratory blanks.
  • Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on LC-MS/MS systems, including mitigation of PFAS background contamination.
  • Prepare calibration standards, isotope-labeled internal standards, surrogates, laboratory control samples, and method blanks following method-specific requirements and project plans.
  • Prepare and process PFAS data using MultiQuant, Analyst, or Sciex OS software and enter results and observations into LIMS.
  • Perform moderately complex calculations and data manipulation in support of reporting limits, detection limits, and client-specific deliverables.
  • Track analytical progress against project milestones and communicate scheduling, technical, or data quality risks to the supervisor or project manager.

Benefits

  • Compressed work schedule, with most teams having every other Friday off.
  • Hybrid work flexibility, generally 60% in-office and 40% remote, dependent on team and position needs.
  • Paid time off.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage with wellness incentives and benefits.
  • Optional supplemental benefits.
  • Coverage for partners, gender-affirming care and health support, and family formation support.
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan, with a 5% employer contribution for most employees and matching contributions.
  • Tuition assistance for higher education.
