About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. To represent the YMCA personally, professionally, and in a manner following the mission and goals of the YMCA. The Wellness Center Instructor, under the supervision of the Health and Wellness Director, provides safe, motivational, and knowledgeable leadership to the members, volunteers, and program participants. All Merrimack Valley YMCA staff will help champion a culture of service excellence and support and advocate the mission and values of the YMCA.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1-year prior experience in the health and fitness field through employment and self-use.
  • Current YMCA Personal Training Instructor and/or national Personal Training certification throughout employment and/or Senior year college student in Exercise Science or equivalent with relevant clinical time.
  • Full competency of all cardiovascular and resistance training equipment in the Wellness Center.
  • Must apply Personal Training skills by way of a mock training session with Health and Wellness Director and/or Senior Physical Director.
  • Must possess and utilize excellent communication, customer service, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate prior ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Attend New Employee Orientation within 60 days of date of hire.
  • Must have good human relations’ and communication skills to facilitate positive relationships with staff, volunteers, parents, members, and program participants.
  • Must be able to participate in various employee trainings, staff meetings, and orientations at the YMCA.
  • Must be able to interact and communicate well with supervisors, peers, participants, and members.
  • Must be committed to the Merrimack Valley YMCA’s mission, character development, and goals.

Responsibilities

  • Keep up with required minimum continuing education credits to maintain certification(s) current throughout employment.
  • Work with only those clients who are free from medical and/or orthopedic limitations.
  • Meet with the Health and Wellness Director prior to each client’s first training session to discuss fitness testing, evaluations, and explanations of data.
  • Discuss all fitness programs with the Health and Wellness Director.
  • Explain and describe all exercise protocols to the participant.
  • Keep all progress of the client well documented.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of the client at all times.
  • Make the Health and Wellness Director aware of any medical issue or complication to the status of the client, so proper follow-up and referral may take place.
  • Maintain a positive and professional attitude and outlook at all times.
  • Serve as a YMCA resource in the area of health and fitness programming.
  • Keep safety as a first priority, emphasizing personal safety and emotional well-being of all staff, volunteers, members, and program participants using the YMCA and the YMCA Wellness Center.
  • By personal example, help interpret quality of YMCA Character Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Report all accidents/unusual incidents immediately to the Member Advancement Director with all necessary documentation.
  • Accept and perform all other responsibilities necessary for the good of the organization.
  • Perform other duties as required by supervisor.
  • Ensure member satisfaction by utilizing Activate America and Member Involvement Model while interacting with members, program participants, and volunteers.
  • Initiate and represent a high quality of service and connectedness with all members, participants, volunteers, and potential members in the wellness center and throughout the YMCA.
  • Be knowledgeable about various YMCA programs and events information.
  • Be available to members, program participants, and staff for questions, concerns, comments, and follow up as needed.
  • Provide leadership and support of Annual Campaign that results in achievement of our annual fund-raising goal.
  • Actively promote membership within the department.
  • Increase visibility and credibility of YMCA programs.
  • Participate in the Activate America initiative.
  • Wear staff shirt and ID badge for all shifts.
  • Attend staff trainings and update skills as position demands.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Senior Management.
