About The Position

The University of Texas at Austin's Recreational Sports department is seeking a Personal Trainer Level 3-4. This position is responsible for teaching clients effective workouts, delivering excellent customer service, and demonstrating safe and effective fitness techniques. The role requires professionalism, adaptability, and strong communication skills to create personalized exercise programs and manage client progress. The trainer will also be responsible for equipment inspections, problem-solving client issues, and contributing to a team environment. This is an hourly, fixed-term, non-benefits eligible, and non-exempt classified position with a maximum of 19 hours per week. Applicants will be asked to demonstrate personal training skills if they advance beyond the initial screening.

Requirements

  • HS graduation or GED.
  • Must be currently certified in CPR and AED (Acceptable certifications include American Heart Association and American Red Cross; any other certification must be approved by the hiring manager).
  • Must be currently certified through a nationally accredited (NCCA) body. Acceptable organizations include the following: -American Council on Exercise (ACE): Certified Personal Trainer or higher; -National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA): Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) or Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS); -American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM): Certified Personal Trainer or higher; or -National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM): Certified Personal Trainer.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients to achieve a safe and effective workout.
  • 6+ years of personal training experience.

Responsibilities

  • Teach clients effective workouts, utilizing strong communication skills and tactfulness to create positive and safe learning environments.
  • Deliver excellent customer service when responding to questions or concerns from Fitness and Wellness clients.
  • Utilize strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills to demonstrate safe and effective fitness techniques.
  • Exhibit exceptional professionalism and work ethic by ensuring proper consultation practices, educating exercise performance, and regularly preparing personalized exercise programs for each client.
  • Utilize adaptability and flexibility by offering and demonstrating a variety of exercise modifications to accommodate the client’s fitness level.
  • Provide consistent communication with clients regarding scheduling appointments and client progress.
  • Maintain all records, forms and associated paperwork within personal training and Fitness and Wellness program area and ensure health confidentiality.
  • Exhibit excellent problem solving, flexibility and adaptability when resolving client complaints, equipment issues, and client no-shows.
  • Take initiative by conducting thorough inspections of equipment and programmatic needs in order to bring any pertinent comments, suggestions or concerns affecting the program, staffing and facilities to the full-time manager.
  • Display a strong ability to work in a team structure and in an environment comprised of many populations.
  • Demonstrate leadership through mentoring other potential personal trainers and completing peer to peer evaluations.
  • Actively participate in staff trainings, fitness workshops and meetings.
  • Hold current nationally recognized and accredited Personal Training certification required to individually train clients.
  • Demonstrate personal accountability and strong work ethic through scheduling, punctuality, appropriate attire, programming preparation.
  • Leverage digital technologies ethically and efficiently to solve problems, complete tasks, and accomplish goals. These may include technologies such as Workday, PT Redemption database and other applicable software/technologies.
  • Abide by university, departmental and area policies and procedures.
  • Be responsive to manager’s emails and other communications; keep timesheets up-to-date and accurate, and submit prior to the established deadlines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
