About The Position

Emmanuel House Hospice is a ten-bed palliative care facility located in Hamilton that offers a home-like environment for individuals who are nearing the end of their lives. Support and care are provided in a team-based approach, including various interdisciplinary team members such as personal support workers, nursing, physicians, spiritual and psychosocial support. We embrace a holistic model of care and the importance of providing individuals dignity at the end of their life, while providing opportunity for the resident and family to exercise religious, cultural and spiritual rituals, customs, rites and beliefs.

Requirements

  • PSW certificate, in good standing from an approved and recognized institution
  • Current CPR and First Aid certificate is required
  • Experience working with individuals in the end of life or with a life limiting illness
  • Good judgement, problem-solving and assessment skills
  • Must be available to work a 12-hour shift schedule that includes days and nights
  • Observe all health and safety rules and work in compliance with the provisions of the occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Enhanced training in palliative/end of life care, such as Fundamentals in Hospice Palliative Care considered an asset
  • Ability to speak French and/or other languages considered an asset
  • Fluency in a language in addition to English is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Provide care to persons, families and friends at the end of life
  • Assist with personal care tasks, such as bathing, grooming, and dressing
  • Administer medications according to prescribed instructions
  • Help with meal preparation and feeding
  • Perform light housekeeping duties, including laundry and tidying up
  • Assist with transportation to appointments or outings
  • Provide companionship and emotional support to individuals
  • Monitor and report any changes in the individual's condition or behavior
  • Administrative work, such as documentation and other duties
  • Work independently and collaboratively within the care team
  • Deliver care in a person-centered way that considers the resident's personal and cultural needs/preferences
  • Responsible for participating in Good Shepherd's Health and Safety programs, procedures, procedures and work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations to minimize risk to clients, staff and others as well as to the property of the Good Shepherd
