About The Position

MMG is seeking an experienced Personal Lines Underwriter and will consider candidates at either the Senior or Lead level. Placement within the role and corresponding compensation will be based on the candidate’s experience, technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and overall qualifications. As a Personal Lines Underwriter, you will evaluate and manage complex personal insurance risks, making sound underwriting decisions that support MMG's profitability and growth objectives. This role serves as a technical resource and mentor to underwriting staff, partners closely with agencies, and provides expertise on underwriting guidelines, risk selection, and coverage solutions while fostering strong agency relationships and exceptional service. This role reports directly to the Personal Lines Operations Supervisor. This role is a hybrid role based in our Richmond, VA office. The hybrid schedule will be three days in the office and two days remote after the training period.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of Personal Lines underwriting experience with demonstrated success in evaluating and managing routine to complex risks.
  • Proven ability to analyze risk exposures and make sound underwriting decisions within established authority levels.
  • Strong understanding of portfolio management, profitability, catastrophe exposure analysis, claims trends, and book-of-business performance.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with agencies, internal business partners, and customers.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel periodically for agency visits, meetings, conferences, and training (20-25% of the time).
  • Prolonged computer use, strong attention to detail, and effective verbal and written communication.

Nice To Haves

  • CPCU, AU, AINS, API, or other insurance-related professional designation.
  • Prior experience serving as a lead underwriter, mentor, team lead, or subject matter expert.
  • Experience participating in underwriting projects, agency reviews, re-underwrites, training initiatives, or process improvement efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the profitability, growth, and overall performance of an assigned Personal Lines territory, monitoring results and reporting key metrics.
  • Evaluate, accept, modify, or decline complex and high-value Personal Lines risks in accordance with underwriting guidelines, policy forms, and rating requirements.
  • Analyze applications, inspections, claims history, financial information, and other risk data to assess exposures and make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Research coverage questions and recommends solutions that align with company guidelines and profitability goals. Refer risks that exceed authority levels to underwriting leadership and provide recommendations for consideration.
  • Collaborate with Claims, Marketing, agencies, and other business partners to address underwriting issues, claims trends, coverage questions, and customer concerns.
  • Serve as a technical resource and mentor, providing guidance and support to underwriting team members.
  • Build and maintain strong agency relationships through regular communication, meetings, agency visits and occasional travel.
  • Participate in special projects, agency development initiatives, and other initiatives that support Personal Lines underwriting objectives.
  • Evaluate personal insurance risks, making underwriting decisions within authority and communicating effectively with internal and external partners.
