About The Position

Berkeley College is currently seeking a Personal Counselor to work on-site at ourthe Newark, NJ and Woodbridge, NJ Campuses. Reporting to the Director of Counseling and Wellness, the Personal Counselor is responsible for providing counseling services to students that address their personal, interpersonal, academic, and career concerns through short-term individual therapy, group counseling, psycho-educational workshops, referrals, and crisis intervention/ management. This position also requires collaboration with the Student Development & Campus Life department and the Office of Accessibility Services.

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an accredited university in counseling, social work.
  • Must hold an active unrestricted license to practice clinically in the State of New Jersey (e.g. LPC/LAC, LCSW/LSW).
  • Working knowledge of the DSM 5-TR.
  • Eligibility for licensure in NY is preferred (e.g. LMHC/LP-MHC).
  • Eligible to obtain BC-TMH Certification within 6 months of appointment.
  • Two years of clinical experience working with young adults and professional learners, preferably in a college setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and high level of attention to detail are essential.
  • Knowledge of local mental health and social service resources.
  • Licensed or license eligible as LPC, LCSW, LMHC, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated interest, commitment, sensitivity, knowledge, and experience in working with students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Strong clinical skills and a solid understanding of college mental health.
  • Knowledge of FERPA, HIPAA, and ADA regulations.
  • Demonstrate ability to speak publicly, provide training to and consult with the campus community regarding mental health topics.
  • Demonstrate ability to effectively manage clinical crisis situations.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.

Nice To Haves

  • Diagnostic privileges are preferred but not mandatory.
  • An understanding of outreach and consultation activities is preferred.
  • Clinical experience in working with two or more of the following specialty areas: crisis management, substance abuse, trauma, disability services, college students, and veterans.
  • Ability to facilitate counseling services in English, and other languages is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide culturally competent short-term individual and group counseling.
  • Provide crisis intervention, assessment, and counseling services to students.
  • Assist in creating ADA accommodation plans for students with disabilities.
  • Assist students in obtaining referrals for long-term therapy and local community resources.
  • Maintain a referral network to area resources.
  • Collaborate and consult with college faculty and staff to ensure student care and well-being.
  • Provide classroom support and training to faculty and students.
  • Participate in activities that promote counseling services such as new student orientation, health service fairs, co-curricular partnerships, classroom visits, and other outreach and psychoeducational programs and activities.
  • Participate in Student Development & Campus Life departmental meetings and activities.
  • Facilitate presentations and campus-wide events on mental health topics.
  • Maintain confidential clinical documentation in a thorough and timely manner using a variety of electronic platforms including an electronic health record system.
