About The Position

This position is responsible for performing complex permit processing and technical support for the Building Division. The Permit Technician III will review permit applications for completeness and compliance with established codes and ordinances, issue permits, and provide guidance to applicants. This role requires a thorough understanding of building codes, zoning regulations, and permit processes. The Permit Technician III will also assist in training and mentoring lower-level permit technicians and may be involved in developing and improving departmental procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in permit processing, plan review, or a related field within a municipal building department.
  • Thorough knowledge of building codes (e.g., International Building Code, International Residential Code), zoning ordinances, and other relevant regulations.
  • Proficiency in permit management software and standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to interpret and apply complex codes and regulations.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Certification as a Certified Permit Technician (CPT) or similar credential.
  • Experience with Accela or similar permitting software.
  • Experience in plan review for building permits.

Responsibilities

  • Review and process complex building permit applications for completeness and compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Issue building permits, certificates of occupancy, and other related documents.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to applicants, contractors, and the public regarding permit requirements and processes.
  • Interpret and explain building codes, zoning ordinances, and other relevant regulations.
  • Maintain accurate and organized permit records, including electronic and paper files.
  • Assist in the training and mentoring of Permit Technicians I and II.
  • Collaborate with other departments and divisions to ensure coordinated review and approval of permit applications.
  • Research and resolve complex issues related to permit applications and processing.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new procedures and process improvements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
