About The Position

The City of Marion has one opening in the Community Development Department. Depending on qualifications, the position will either be classified as a Permit Clerk or a Permit Technician I. In either role, the position will assist the Building Department in meeting its responsibilities. The nature of this position is such that the employee has considerable independence in performing routine work, processing permits, scheduling inspections, takes in and processes complaints, giving information and related duties. Direction and supervision are received from the Building Manager. The additional Permit Technician I job duties and responsibilities section is included below.

Requirements

  • High school diploma.
  • Experience in performing office/clerical duties.
  • Ability to understand and implement oral and written communications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, general public and fellow employees.
  • Ability to keep and maintain department records in an organized and orderly way.
  • Ability to use computers, including word-processing and specialized building permit/inspection software applications.
  • Must have ICC permit technician certification (ICC Exam Permit Technician 14).
  • Must have minimum 1 year experience as a Permit Clerk or Technician.

Nice To Haves

  • Must be able to obtain the ICC Permit Technician certification 14 with-in one year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Performs the clerical and electronic filing functions of the Building Department.
  • Functions as a receptionist, uses the phone system to transfer calls, meets the public and offers information requiring knowledge of departmental policies and procedures, contacts other employees, officials, and the general public with regard to appointment scheduling.
  • Uses computer and other office equipment necessary to perform required work, including permit/inspection software and scanners.
  • Processes permit applications, reviews submittits for completeness and accuracy, receives payments, and issues permits.
  • Performs related clerical and administrative work as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Back-up for administrative assistant for the community development department which includes assisting in preparation of board, commission, or council agenda items and memos.
  • Back-up for administrative assistant for the rental housing department which includes data entry, answering phone calls, calling landlords, and processing rental housing inspections.
