About The Position

This is a permanent substitute teacher position for the 2026-2027 school year at Edward Ortiz Middle School. The role is a 1.0 FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) position with a contract length of 9 months and a pay schedule for permanent substitutes. The position is exempt from overtime and requires 35 hours per week. The substitute will be assigned to one school site for the duration of the contract period, assisting with classroom instruction in the absence of a teacher. The responsibilities include following and teaching lesson plans for any class and subject as directed by the site administrator, aiding students in understanding subject matter, and ensuring regular classroom routines are followed in accordance with school, district, and state directives. All positions with Santa Fe Public Schools require a background check and orientation/training session, with potential additional requirements based on federal or state regulations.

Requirements

  • Minimum: High school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a New Mexico Substitute Teaching License or New Mexico Teaching License.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Understand and follow lesson plans.
  • Establish effective working relationships with staff and students.
  • Set the proper tone from the beginning of any class for effective classroom management.
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality when dealing with student, staff, and/or parent information.
  • Embraces variety by willingly serving in any class/subject in the absence of regular teacher/coach.
  • Perform all functions in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures.
  • Functional computer literacy.
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
  • Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
  • Demonstrates reliability as evidenced by attendance records and punctuality.
  • Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.
  • Begins and completes work within the allotted time.
  • Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the work environment.
  • Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment including its capabilities, limitations and appropriate/ special application.
  • Protects the district’s resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
  • Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree or higher degree.
  • Bilingual: English - Spanish.
  • Flexible, friendly, and good at establishing quick rapport with students.
  • Regular instruction to special needs children may be necessary.
  • Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the office upon arrival at school to receive work assignment.
  • Check the mailbox of the absent teacher for materials requiring immediate attention.
  • Request clarification of school rules and procedures, if necessary.
  • Implement or create district/school lesson plans, ensuring the integrity of academic time and motivating students to learn and participate.
  • Institute and communicate clear objectives for all lessons, assignments, units, and projects in accordance with curriculum goals.
  • Organize students for effective instruction.
  • Report all student injuries, accidents, illnesses, and discipline problems to the appropriate authority immediately or as soon as is reasonably possible.
  • Supervise students out of class such as in the hallways and in the cafeteria.
  • Dismiss all students from the learning environment before leaving.
  • Collect and place students’ papers in the regular teacher’s desk.
  • Return instructional materials, equipment, and keys to the proper place.
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality of student and school personnel information.
  • Maintain discipline and classroom control that fosters a safe and positive learning environment for all students and staff in accordance with school policies.
  • Ensure adequate supervision to assure the health, welfare, and safety of all students.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Cooperate with staff and support personnel in helping students with health, attitude, learning, and behavioral problems.
  • Utilize technology in the classroom to include computers, projection devices, calculators, etc.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by building administrator(s) in accordance with district/school/state policies and practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
