About The Position

This position is for a Permanent Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1) or Highway Technician 1 (HT1) in Harrison County. The selected candidate will be placed in the classification for which they meet minimum qualifications. The role involves serving the public and working to make Ohio roads safer, including performing highway maintenance activities and snow & ice operations. The State of Ohio is a drug-free workplace, and this position is subject to additional restrictions pursuant to the State of Ohio Drug-Free Workplace Policy (HR-39), as well as federal testing regulations (49 CFR Part 40 and 49 CFR Part 382) which prohibit the use of marijuana. Final applicants are required to register as a driver in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse. This position is overtime eligible based on FLSA Standards, and all bargaining unit new hires must serve a one-year probationary period. A criminal background check and urinalysis for illegal drug use are required for selected candidates.

Requirements

  • For Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1): Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary
  • For Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1): Must obtain Class B Commercial Drivers License with tanker endorsement without airbrake restriction
  • For Highway Technician 1 (HT1): Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & decimals, percentages & fractions; ability to read, write & speak common English vocabulary
  • For Highway Technician 1 (HT1): 3 months training or 3 months experience in operation of basic equipment
  • For Highway Technician 1 (HT1): Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement without airbrake restriction
  • Subject to the State of Ohio Drug-Free Workplace Policy (HR-39)
  • Required to undergo a criminal background check
  • Required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointments
  • Subject to federal testing regulations pursuant to 49 CFR Part 40 (Federal Drug and Alcohol Regulations) and 49 CFR Part 382 (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) which prohibits the use of marijuana, including medical marijuana

Responsibilities

  • Serve the public and work to make the roads in Ohio safer
  • Attend training to obtain CDL licensure, if not already a licensed CDL holder
  • Perform highway maintenance activities, including flagging, pothole patching, repairing guardrails, litter pickup, mowing
  • Perform snow & ice operations
