About The Position

The State of Ohio is a drug-free workplace, prohibiting the use of marijuana. This position may be subject to additional restrictions under the State of Ohio Drug-Free Workplace Policy (HR-39) and federal testing regulations (49 CFR Part 40 and 49 CFR Part 382), which also prohibit marijuana use. Selected applicants are required to register as a driver in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is responsible for building and maintaining the nation’s 5th largest interstate system and 3rd largest number of bridges, aiming to provide safe and efficient roadways for Ohioans. The selected candidate will be placed in the classification (HMW1 or HT1) for which they meet minimum qualifications. The role involves serving the public and working to make Ohio roads safer, including attending training for CDL licensure if not already held.

Requirements

  • Must serve a one (1) year probationary period
  • Required to undergo a criminal background check
  • Required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointments
  • Subject to federal testing regulations pursuant to 49 CFR Part 40 (Federal Drug and Alcohol Regulations) and 49 CFR Part 382 (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration)
  • Required to register as a driver in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse
  • For Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary
  • For Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Must obtain Class B Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement without airbrake restriction
  • For Highway Technician 1: Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & decimals, percentages & fractions
  • For Highway Technician 1: Ability to read, write & speak common English vocabulary
  • For Highway Technician 1: 3 months training or 3 months experience in operation of basic equipment
  • For Highway Technician 1: Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement without airbrake restriction

Responsibilities

  • Attend training to obtain CDL licensure (if not already a licensed CDL holder)
  • Perform highway maintenance activities; including flagging, pothole patching, repairing guardrails, litter pickup, mowing
  • Perform snow & ice operations
