About The Position

Performs designated duties to assist the department staff in the areas of patient care and departmental and equipment orderliness and cleanliness. This role supports the surgical team by preparing operating rooms, managing equipment, and assisting with patient positioning.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or higher preferred
  • BLS - Certified as a Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider required within 90 days of employment

Responsibilities

  • Assists nurses and techs with the set up of Surgical procedures for various specialties including Cardiovascular, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic, Robotic, Plastics, Bariatrics, and General to include trauma.
  • Identifies and handles over 100 pieces of equipment, including fracture tables, positioning devices, cautery devices, tourniquets, lasers, fluid management devices, and blood management devices.
  • Cleans operating rooms (OR) between surgical cases and maintains proper setup for the next procedure, including cleaning contaminated areas, handling soiled linen and trash, and transporting them to the soiled utility room.
  • Runs bags of soiled linen and trash through the x-ray machine to check for instruments/supplies.
  • Uses critical thinking to prioritize and respond to various work alerts such as Routine Turnover, MRSA/MDRO Turnover, VRE/NF Turnover, CDiff Turnover, TB Turnover, CJD Turnover, Mask Turnover, Move Clean, Position Help, PCT Routine, PCT Stat, Call Me, Code Blue, and Staff Assist.
  • Assists OR physicians and nurses with patient positioning for complex procedures, utilizing positioning aids and knowledge of proper body mechanics and range of motion.
  • Transports patients from pre-op areas to line/block and assists in transporting critical patients to the OR from the Emergency Department.
  • Understands and utilizes basic sterile technique and OSHA requirements when entering an OR for turnover or patient positioning, including recognizing sterile fields and when masks are required.
  • Assists with maintaining inventory supplies and coordinates supply deliveries.
  • Prepares and has knowledge of OR specialty beds and all OR equipment, including assembly, function, and dismantling of accessories.
  • Maintains surgical equipment, including emptying and cleaning Neptunes, taking beds apart, and cleaning suction cannisters/machines.
  • Transports surgical specimens to pathology, lab, or blood bank.
  • Utilizes safe lifting techniques and appropriate assistive devices.
  • Cleans and maintains the entire Restricted and Semi Restricted work areas.
