About The Position

The Perioperative Scheduler efficiently and accurately performs clerical functions related to the scheduling of OR cases. This role involves scheduling patient surgeries, managing calls, processing electronic intake, ensuring correct patient and procedure identification, and coordinating with various departments and surgeon offices. The scheduler also registers patients for procedures at surgery center locations and contributes to direct and indirect patient care by tracking block releases, scheduling C-sections, and coordinating offsite anesthesia. Additionally, the role acts as a resource for surgeon offices regarding OR scheduling.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED or Higher Level of Education.
  • Strong leadership ability.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Independent and critical thinking skills.
  • Sound judgment.
  • Knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.
  • Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules patient surgeries for designated Operating rooms.
  • Answers calls quickly and professionally.
  • Receives, files, and distributes electronic intake.
  • Ensures/assigns quick surgery account with correct date of service prior to placing onto OR schedule.
  • Schedules surgeries appropriately using tools available.
  • Ensures correct identification of patient, procedure, laterality, and surgeon.
  • Contacts operating room to address special circumstances for operating room schedule.
  • Attaches correct surgeon specific preference card to scheduled case.
  • Verifies day prior surgery schedule, including surgery, laterality, anesthesia type, and surgeon.
  • Ensures communication with all customers.
  • Communicates with departments for add-on cases and cancellations for the same/ next business day.
  • Communicates with surgeon offices concerning scheduling issues.
  • Maintains a good working relationship with both the department and other departments including surgeon offices.
  • Interacts professionally with surgeon/surgeon office and all members of the health care team.
  • Takes responsibility for asking for assistance when required.
  • Informs supervisor, Manager, or Director of problematic situations and demonstrates ability to support recommendations.
  • Actively participates in the anesthesia/ OR scheduling daily huddle.
  • Registration of patients that present for procedures at Surgery center locations.
  • Track block release for surgeons.
  • Schedules C-sections for Obstetric physicians based on established guidelines.
  • Works with anesthesia department for coordination of offsite anesthesia required procedures.
  • Assists verification staff with providing patient information (intake form) when needed.
  • Acts as a resource for surgeon’s office with questions related to ability to view/utilize OR scheduled.
