About The Position

The Perioperative Services Internship at South Shore Health offers a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience for students and recent graduates interested in exploring a wide range of healthcare career pathways. This immersive program provides exposure to both clinical and operational aspects of a high-performing perioperative environment within a leading community health system. Interns will collaborate closely with the Surgical and Perioperative Services leadership team, as well as interdisciplinary partners including nursing, physicians, Central Processing (CPD), supply chain, administrative staff, and external vendors. Through this experience, interns will gain a systems-level understanding of how perioperative services support safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. A central component of the internship is the design and execution of a structured quality improvement or operational project that directly supports South Shore Health’s mission.

Responsibilities

  • Support special projects and various operational work streams as directed by Perioperative Services Operations Manager, and Executive Director
  • Contribute actively to team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Assist in the collection, organization, and analysis of healthcare-related data.
  • Ensure data accuracy and integrity, utilizing appropriate software tools and methodologies.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization and propose innovative solutions to streamline workflows and enhance productivity.
  • Assist in the implementation of approved process improvement initiatives.
  • Create and maintain accurate documentation, including policies, procedures, and project-related materials.
  • Generate regular reports, dashboards, and presentations to effectively communicate project progress and outcomes.
  • Establish professional relationships with relevant internal cross-functional stakeholders including Surgery, Anesthesia, Supply Chain, CPD, and Quality and Safety
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to assist in the planning, development, and implementation of projects relative to above departments/stakeholders.
  • Contribute innovative ideas and support the execution of initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency between relevant departments/stakeholders.
  • Shadow perioperative and surgical service roles including, but not limited to: Surgical Schedulers, Clinical Nurse Coordinator, Nursing Assistants, CPD Leads, Supply Chain, Nurse Manager, ACNO, Operations Manager, Executive Director, Vice President, Advanced Practice Providers (PA’s and NP’s), Surgeon-in-Chief, Outside Device Sales Representatives (e.g., Drager, Integra, Smith & Nephew, Stryker, and more).
  • Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor while interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
