About The Position

This position operates extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment during medical procedures where artificial support or temporary replacement of a patient's circulatory or respiratory functions is necessary.

Requirements

  • Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion, or (if new graduate) certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion within 18 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of equipment available to perform extracorporeal circulation functions and techniques.
  • Skill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment.
  • Knowledge of implantable ventricular assist device equipment available.
  • Skill in setup/operation of implantable ventricular assist device equipment.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with physicians, patients, and other staff.
  • Ability to react calmly in stressful situations.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps the surgeon and other personnel fully informed.
  • Ensures the sterility and integrity of packaging of disposable equipment used, as well as the correct setup and breakdown of disposable and non-disposable, and sterile and non-sterile equipment.
  • Monitors the cell saver and operates the heart-lung machine, blood gas analysis machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac-assist devices.
  • Records relevant perfusion information during surgery; analyzes and maintains records after surgery.
  • Performs quality control/preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Conducts periodic in-service training and research activities.
