About The Position

The VA Caribbean Healthcare System in San Juan, Puerto Rico, is seeking a Perfusionist to join their team. This role involves operating and managing cardiopulmonary bypass equipment during open-heart surgical procedures, ensuring optimal patient hemodynamic stability and oxygenation. The Perfusionist will be responsible for setting up, calibrating, and maintaining all perfusion equipment, monitoring and adjusting critical patient parameters throughout procedures, and assisting the surgical team with blood management. Standby support for interventional cardiology cases is also required. This position is located in San Juan, a vibrant city with a rich history and natural beauty, offering a unique living and working experience.

Requirements

• Must hold current certification as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP)
• Must have a current and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia
• Must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association
• Proficiency with cardiac perfusion pump, heater-cooler, Impella, intra-aortic balloon pump, and EVH vein harvesting pump
• Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited perfusion program
• Bilingual in Spanish and English

Responsibilities

• Operate and manage cardiopulmonary bypass equipment during open-heart surgical procedures, ensuring optimal patient hemodynamic stability and oxygenation
• Set up, calibrate, and maintain all perfusion equipment including the cardiac perfusion pump, heater-cooler units, Impella devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and EVH vein harvesting systems
• Monitor and adjust blood flow rates, gas exchange, anticoagulation levels, and patient temperature throughout cardiac surgical procedures
• Assist the surgical team with intraoperative autotransfusion, cell salvage, and blood product management
• Perform quality assurance checks on all perfusion equipment and maintain accurate procedure records
• Provide standby support for interventional cardiology cases as needed
