Performs perfusion practices as it relates to patient specific support and treatment plans under the direct supervision of operating surgeon, anesthesiologist, or ICU attending. This role requires maintaining utmost confidentiality, adhering to hospital policies, and demonstrating ethical business practices. The Perfusionist is responsible for preparing and operating the cardiopulmonary bypass machine, selecting appropriate circuits and cannulas, monitoring patient physiology during bypass, and communicating any changes to the surgical and anesthesia teams. Additionally, the role involves providing autotransfusion services, managing blood gas analysis and other laboratory tests, and participating in quality control and research. The Perfusionist also plays a role in professional development, on-call responsibilities for emergencies, facilitating communication within the healthcare team, and staying updated on industry innovations through vendor communication and staff in-services.
