About The Position

Xcel Energy is seeking interns to contribute to their Performance Optimization Reliability Engineering group. This role offers the opportunity to apply skills in a challenging and growth-oriented environment, making a difference for communities. Interns will support plant engineering and operations, with specific tasks at Tolk Station involving water well studies. This includes using equipment to test wells, determine flow rates, water draw down, and pump efficiencies, and then compiling this data into a report to analyze the water supply situation and future needs. The internship is designed to provide valuable experience and potential for extension based on performance and business needs.

Requirements

  • Current student, Sophomore or higher (as of Fall 2027)
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in electrical, mechanical, civil, or chemical engineering.
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)
  • Able to commute to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer a mechanical or electrical candidate.
  • Competent with Microsoft Office.
  • Good report writing skills.
  • Good communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a study of all water wells providing water to the plant.
  • Utilize a flow meter and other equipment to test each functioning water well to determine flow rates, water draw down and pump efficiencies.
  • Write a report on the information gathered from water well testing.
  • Support plants engineering as well as plant operations.
  • Capital budget development.
  • Support plant engineering with operational issues.
  • Develop plant projects, both capital and O&M.
  • Getting quotes and planning material deliveries.
  • Help plant engineering troubleshoot plant issues.
