The P IV PS RELIABILITY AND PERFORMANCE ENGINEERING Department of the P POWER SUPPLY ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. This posting seeks to fill at either the Performance Engineer or Sr Performance Engineer level; whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate. Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of engineering normally acquired through advanced college level engineering courses and several years professional experience.
  • Working knowledge of advanced analytics.
  • Working knowledge of advanced analytics software such as APR or other reliability or condition based predictive diagnosis software applications.
  • Working knowledge of condition monitoring and diagnostic technologies.
  • Strong working knowledge of rotating components such as pumps, motors, steam turbines, generators and field instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) programs and technology applications.
  • Familiarity with vibration analysis of rotating equipment.
  • Familiarity with oil-based steam Rankine cycle units, combustion turbines, and reciprocating internal combustion engine (RICE) technologies, and associated systems and operation.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering fundamentals in the appropriate specialty areas (i.e., physics, chemistry, thermodynamics, power, analog and digital electronics, vector analysis, materials), normally acquired through advanced, college level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of appropriate federal, state, industry and company regulations, codes and practices.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and mainframe systems and related software applications. Including but not limited to: Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), VBA, and SAP CMMS.
  • Working knowledge of all aspects of power plant systems & operations.
  • Knowledge in developing, implementing and operating performance monitoring programs is highly desired.
  • Familiarity of ASME Performance Test Codes.
  • Familiarity with power plant controls and control logic.
  • Familiarity with AVEVA PI system is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a variety of individuals at all levels within and outside the company using tact, courtesy and discretion.
  • Analytical, conceptual and administrative skills to assess the demands of the job, recommend proper actions, and handle multiple systems, projects and programs with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess good problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to perform root-cause analyses is a plus.
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with entities within and external to the company.
  • In-depth analytical and computational skills for technical writing, statistical computations, and economic analysis.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for State of Hawaii driver’s license.
  • Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy.
  • Multiple years (5-7) with at least 3 years of power plant engineering, power plant operations or maintenance experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of advanced analytics.
  • Thorough knowledge of advanced analytics software such as APR or other reliability or condition based predictive diagnosis software applications.
  • Thorough knowledge of condition monitoring and diagnostic technologies.
  • Thorough knowledge of specific equipment design, construction, operation and maintenance.
  • Thorough knowledge of power plant thermal performance calculations and steam/turbine cycle efficiency calculation/monitoring.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of power plant systems & operations.
  • Thorough knowledge in developing, implementing and operating performance monitoring programs is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, decision making, and the ability to work with a variety of individuals.
  • Ability to perform, both as individual contributor and as a leader or member of self-directed work teams.
  • Awareness of latest industry developments for maintenance and/or operational optimization, evaluating same, and applying those which satisfy the Company’s strategic and tactical objectives.
  • In-depth analytical, computational, and organizing skills for technical writing, record keeping, statistical computations and economic analyses.
  • Demonstrated presentation/facilitation skills to conduct group meetings and train department personnel.
  • Extensive (8+ years) experience with 5 or more years of power plant engineering or power plant operations & maintenance experience.

Responsibilities

  • Performs daily monitoring of site critical components that have installed models actively collecting data using advanced analytics software.
  • Responds, evaluates, and prioritizes alarms for potential equipment related issues and interacts with station personnel to provide recommendations on optimizing plant equipment and systems.
  • Monitors equipment performance and predicts component health.
  • Alerts corporate subject matter experts (“SME”) and station personnel of anomalies within those trends which could adversely affect the reliability, availability, maintainability and performance of equipment.
  • Identifies and classifies associated risks to the plant.
  • Provides recommendations to mitigate risks, and follows up to ensure resolutions are tracked through to completion.
  • Monitors equipment condition and makes timely and appropriate alteration and repair recommendations based on a thorough review of performance monitoring data, maintenance and operational records and data, past and present, and latest industry and/or OEM standards and practices.
  • Supports the implementation of advanced analytics software (e.g., Advanced Pattern Recognition (“APR”)) software models for the company.
  • SME for all aspects of the monitoring and diagnostic (“M&D”) center software tools including, but not limited to: AVEVA PI Vision, AVEVA PI Asset Framework, AVEVA PI Datalink, Microsoft Excel, VBA, and APR software and thermal performance.
  • Develops, maintains, and uses advanced analytics software models and plant operational data to detect changes in the operating behavior of plant equipment and systems.
  • Seeks opportunities to improve the department’s operational and/or maintenance practices and procedures.
  • Promotes teamwork and self-directed workforce to support quality initiatives and Company values.
  • Supports and interfaces with corporate component system owners and SMEs to assess equipment anomalies.
  • Communicates equipment anomalies to plant operations and engineering personnel and field technologists.
  • Works with power plant staff to troubleshoot and resolve operational problems identified by thermal performance monitoring.
  • Collaborates with station personnel and provided recommendations to optimize plant equipment and systems.
  • Supports two-way communications to ensure a focused and well-informed workforce.
  • Maintains appropriate records and statistics to develop performance metrics for distribution.
  • Performs economic evaluations, as necessary.
  • Evaluations include theoretical and actual cost/benefit analyses.
  • Recommends cost-effective equipment modifications and/or additions.
  • Maintains a constant vigilance for opportunities to improve the department’s operational and/or maintenance practices and procedures.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
  • Provides expert level field engineering and technical consultative services to the generating stations.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and resolves operational problems, optimizing maintenance and operational practices to enhance equipment performance, reliability, and lifecycle.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable codes and regulations.
  • Responsible for the training and coaching of Performance Engineers.
  • Research coordinates and directs complex technical assignments expected to result in new or improved operational and/or maintenance practices and procedures.
  • Serves as technical consultant to the company generation assets.
  • Provides training for department personnel, as needed.
  • Trains, provides guidance, and mentors Performance Engineers.
