About The Position

The per-diem Registered Nurse is responsible partnering Program Directors and Social Workers for the oversight of the health and wellness care of youth in the programs. Knowledge of childhood trauma and the impacts upon youth’s physical, spiritual, emotional, mental and vocational health is paramount. Knowledge of standard nursing care, protocols, health and physical safety, documentation, etc. is also required. The Registered Nurse works closely with the Program Managers and Social Worker(s) in the design and facilitation of the program milieu and service delivery system, quality assurance measurements and agency goals. Assesses, treats, cares for, follows-up on and provides documentation for the healthcare needs of youth in care within the scope of practice for a licensed professional nurse in the state of New York. This individual is directly accountable to the Director of Medical Services. This position will be crossed trained in OCFS and OMH.

Requirements

  • NYS Licensed Registered Nurse
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and driving record in accordance with agency standards.
  • 3+ years’ experience working as a Registered Nurse, experience working with youth and families is preferred. Experience working as part of a team preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides the overall oversight to assigned departmental support area; provide direct support to staff in assigned departmental area in accordance with all Glove House, state and regulatory requirements.
  • Guided by organizational values and trauma informed practice in all interactions.
  • Treats all children, families, staff and ancillary providers with respect and courtesy.
  • Demonstrates and models sensitivity to the cultural background of children, families and co-workers.
  • Assures that all processes within the Department operate in compliance with applicable NYS codes, rules and regulations and with Glove House policies and procedures.
  • Assesses, treats, cares for, follows-up on and provides documentation for the healthcare needs of youth in care within the scope of practice for a licensed professional nurse in the state of New York.
  • Assures the coordination of initial, follow-up and periodic healthcare assessments of residents as required by the agency and governing bodies’ policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Completes and documents the comprehensive initial nursing assessment/evaluation including need for medical, dental, psychiatric, developmental, and provides documentation of nursing assessment after a significant incident (i.e. therapeutic hold, AWOL, injury) per agency policy and procedure.
  • Transcribes, interprets, initiates and directs care ordered by healthcare providers (received via prescription, fax, in person, telephone, etc.) within the guidelines of agency policies and procedures or practices.
  • Communicates all high-profile healthcare concerns to the Sr. Director Programs and Quality, Program Managers, Director of Medical Services and staff.
  • Collects or oversees the collection of samples necessary for laboratory screening or tests as directed by agency policy or prescribed by a healthcare provider.
  • Participates as the healthcare representative for each assigned resident’s treatment team providing education and resource information for all diagnoses.
  • Participates in the development of all program policy and procedures to ensure that operations are in conformance with appropriate regulations and standards.
  • Monitors the effects and possible side effects of all medications administered to residents in conjunction with program staff, and oversees that medications are taken by residents as prescribed.
  • May be called upon to ensure adequate staff coverage is scheduled for program needs.
  • Provide oversight and direction to ensure the completion and maintenance of all departmental records and documentation.
  • Assures all documentation is completed in a timely fashion.
  • Reviews and accurately documents all healthcare related events in a timely manner in multiple electronic medical records used by the company.
  • Oversees or maintains all healthcare records such as psychiatric files, nursing files, healthcare portion of youth’s file, etc. in the absence of the program Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Ensures renewal of necessary medication prescriptions, maintenance of medication and disposal of outdated or discontinued drugs according to agency policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates healthcare services for residents between the primary care provider and specialty care providers as necessary.
  • Serves as a healthcare (medical, dental, optical, psychiatric, etc.) medication training and educational resource for the residents, their families, and program staff in the absence of the program Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • Monitors the effects and possible side effects of all medications administered to residents in conjunction with program staff, and oversees that medications are taken by residents as prescribed.
  • Required to safely travel on agency business, as required by job demands. Maintain accurate mileage documentation and submit in required agency timeframes.
  • Consistently attends mandated agency and department meetings and participates on standing agency committees and community committees as assigned.
