Requirements

  • CA Phlebotomy I certification
  • High School Diploma
  • Communicates effectively with patients, public and healthcare personnel.
  • Able to organize work, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Accuracy in the identification and transcription of numbers and names.

Responsibilities

  • Properly identify patients prior to drawing capillary or venous blood.
  • Collect blood efficiently and send for analysis.
  • Greet patients courteously and accurately record all pertinent demographics in a timely manner.
  • Receive and process patient and test information according to established procedures.
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture according to written procedures.
  • Accurately label all specimens with pertinent information.
  • Process and deliver specimens as required.
  • Report all problem punctures (venipuncture/capillary) to the person in charge.
  • Perform data input and data retrieval from laboratory and hospital information systems.
  • Operate laboratory communication systems.
  • Maintain quality control and assist in performance of Quality Improvement.
  • In the event of biological or chemical accidents, follow procedures.
  • Attend all required laboratory safety meetings.
  • Immediately report all accidents to the supervisor verbally and in writing using the appropriate forms.
  • Maintain continued competence of technical skills and professional image.
  • Correctly prepare appropriate forms for departmental use.
  • Accurately maintain department files.
  • Consistently maintain a neat work area.
  • Orient and train new employees to departmental procedures when required.
  • Complete any and all competency testing as assigned by supervisor.
  • May be required to work at another site if needed.
  • Oversee front office operations including Phlebotomists and Lab Aides (Lead Duties).
  • Coordinate breaks/lunches (Lead Duties).
  • Find coverage for staffing issues in the absence of the Supervisor (Lead Duties).
  • Send extra staff home if workload allows (Lead Duties).
  • Dispatch and coordinate phlebotomists to ensure lab draws are done efficiently and timely (Lead Duties).
  • Resolve order conflicts and service issues (Lead Duties).
  • Make sure all specimens are processed correctly and in a timely manner (Lead Duties).
  • Check all RN and FTC orders (Lead Duties).
  • Check pendings throughout the shift to make sure all specimens are accounted for (Lead Duties).
  • Cancel any labs that are no longer needed including duplicates and discharges (Lead Duties).
  • Under the direction of appropriately licensed personnel, may perform tests and procedures where assigned in the facility using protocols prescribed in procedure and instrument operations manuals (e.g. “waived” point-of-care-testing) (If assigned to a non-acute care facility).
  • Escort patients to exam rooms (If assigned to a non-acute care facility).
  • May take and record vital signs (If assigned to a non-acute care facility).
  • Make sure all paperwork is completed (If assigned to a non-acute care facility).
  • Assist with patient flow (If assigned to a non-acute care facility).
  • Accurately enter vital signs into patient management computer system (If assigned to a non-acute care facility).
  • Enter appropriate information into the medical record, adhering to medical record guidelines (If assigned to a non-acute care facility).
  • Use department computer systems to enter and obtain information/documentation (If assigned to a non-acute care facility).
  • May be assigned to transport patients.
  • Transport patients during the admission and discharge process using the appropriate mode as indicated based on the patient complaint or condition.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area.
  • Be knowledgeable of growth and development for all patient/family cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age-specific needs.
  • Effectively communicate and care for patient and family as reflected in the Plan for Provision of Care.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
