The Mammography Technologist must follow physicians’ orders precisely and conform to regulations concerning the use of radiation to protect themselves, their patients, and their coworkers from unnecessary exposure. They operate the equipment to produce high quality images, obtain essential information from patients, medical records, and previous scans for clinical correlation, and prepare and assist patients for Mammographic imaging as requested by a physician. They provide patient care with dignity and respect, educate patients about procedures, and obtain optimum quality images through proper anatomical positioning and techniques. The role also involves observing and following safety procedures, performing quality assurance checks, completing documentation, and reporting deficiencies. They must be able to work independently, demonstrate flexibility, and commit to total quality management and service excellence. Maintaining professional and technical knowledge through training and continuing education is essential, along with familiarity with department systems and emergency procedures. The technologist needs a great knowledge of human anatomy, cross-section anatomy, proper positioning skills, and appropriate utilization of protocols and scanning techniques, and must practice regulatory standards of MQSA and ACR.
