About The Position

Reporting to the Senior Director of Education within the Department of Spiritual Care and Education, the Per-Diem Chaplain is responsible for addressing the spiritual, religious, cultural, and emotional needs of patients, families, and staff. The Per-Diem Chaplain joins a dynamic team within the Department of Spiritual Care and Education, fostering collaborative relationships with interdisciplinary care teams and contributing to the well-being of the Mount Sinai community. The Per-Diem Chaplain position may be temporary or part-time. The Per‑Diem Chaplain is responsible for on‑call coverage—primarily on weeknights, at least once weekly—from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. the following morning. Additional coverage on weekends and holidays may be required. The role serves the Manhattan hospitals within the Mount Sinai Health System. This position is primarily remote, with initial responses by phone and in‑person support provided as needed in accordance with departmental policies. Candidates must reside within one hour of The Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai West, and Mount Sinai Morningside. Compensation includes a standard per‑diem rate with additional pay based on incoming requests.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Successful completion of at least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education in an accredited program.
  • Experience as a spiritual care provider in a healthcare setting.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate chaplaincy knowledge and skills.
  • Foster effective communication with diverse patients, family members, and staff.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clinical and support staff.
  • Liaise with hospital and community clergy.
  • Conduct visits across designated hospital floors.
  • Assess and address spiritual and religious needs, ensuring tailored interventions.
  • Provide care and support to hospital staff.
  • Fulfill documentation requirements, including electronic health record charting.
  • Uphold the code of ethics of the Association of Professional Chaplains.
  • Adhere to all Mount Sinai Health System standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
