PennDOT CDL Operator Trainee (Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee)
About The Position
The PennDOT CDL Operator Trainee receives structured training in the safe operation of highway equipment and performs manual labor supporting maintenance crews. The role prepares the trainee for licensing, certification, and participation in roadway operations. Training and duties include operating heavy trucks, loaders, and other construction equipment; following safety procedures and using protective equipment; completing laboring tasks with hand and powered tools; conducting visual equipment inspections and basic adjustments; documenting findings orally and in writing; and applying environmental protection requirements during maintenance activities. This is a full-time, onsite position with work hours of 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and a 30-minute lunch. The schedule may vary seasonally due to weather or operational needs. Telework is not available. New Commonwealth of Pennsylvania employees will start at an annual salary of $42,347 before taxes.
Requirements
- Possess an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
- Possess an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit on the first day of work.
- Possess an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of work.
- Be able to perform the essential job functions.
Responsibilities
- Learn to safely and correctly operate heavy trucks, loaders, and other construction equipment.
- Follow safety procedures, use protective equipment, and remain aware of hazards in the work area.
- Perform manual labor using tools such as shovels, rakes, chain saws, tampers, and mowers.
- Complete visual inspections, make basic adjustments, and document findings orally and in writing.
- Apply environmental protection requirements during maintenance activities.
