About The Position

Truman College is currently seeking part-time Peer Tutors to assist in a variety of disciplines including, but not limited to, Physics, Engineering, Auto CAD, CIS, Calculus and other higher-level Math. A Peer Tutor provides academic assistance and support to other students, providing individual and/or group tutoring to assist students in developing competency in course work, improve study skills and become independent learners. Peers who are willing and capable of tutoring different courses and disciplines preferred.

Requirements

• Applicants must be 16 years or older, have work permit consent, and eligible to work in the United States
• Applicants must be actively attending one of the City Colleges of Chicago
• Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 semester hours pre-credit or credit classes
• Applicants must be pursuing an approved educational credential, degree, or certificate
• Applicants must have and maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (waived for first semester new students)
• Applicants must be in “good standing” and have no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions
• Applicants must not be current Full or Part-time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago
• All positions are “employment at-will”
• High School Diploma required or actively pursuing a GED at the City Colleges of Chicago
• 3.0 overall GPA and 4.0 GPA in a specific subject matter.
• Strong background in math, science, literature, or other assigned academic subject matter
• Ability to work in a one-on-one or team environment with flexible work hours as needed for scheduled shifts

Nice To Haves

• Peers who are willing and capable of tutoring different courses and disciplines preferred.
• Prior experience in tutoring duties preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

• Under the general direction of the assigned supervisor, the Peer Tutor provides general academic support including tutorial services, basic skills assistance and some general office duties for various City Colleges of Chicago academic departments.
• Provide students with basic skills assistance in the academic area needed.
• Provides one-on-one support and encouragement to help student(s) develop increased sense of self confidence and become an independent learner.
• Engage tutees in active learning, and provides academic assistance and support to help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
• Listens and answers questions during tutoring sessions, helping students how to learn the material, develop and improve appropriate study skills and become independent learners.
• Attends and successfully completes required tutor training meetings.
• Plans tutoring sessions using a collaborative learning approach to help students better understand the course content and concepts, problem solve, and improve study skills.
• Performs related duties as required.
