About The Position

Instructional Student Assistant Employment Opportunity JOB DESCRIPTION: OPEN TO CURRENT STANISLAUS STATE STUDENTS, CURRENTLY ENROLLED OR ELIGIBILE TO ENROLL ONLY. Typically working 7-10 hours per week during the semester and finals week, this position will perform duties to include, but not limited to: Provide academic assistance in the form of Drop-In Peer Tutoring in identified courses in the DBH 288 computer lab or other designated locations. Assist with recruiting activities for S-STEM and other scholarship programs, possibly including visiting computer science classes to give presentations about scholarships. Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students' diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences. Utilize active listening and questioning strategies as the primary tutoring method to diagnose student needs, prior knowledge, skills, and monitor progress. Guide student participation, evaluate student performance, and provide appropriate feedback and encouragement. Provide strategies on how to learn through study strategies (i.e. time management, note taking, textbook reading, test taking). Maintain neat, up to date, accurate and complete records, and help to maintain an orderly work environment. Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice. Recognize primary role to help students learn and become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners. Be direct and kind with students at the same time. Make appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources. Take student attendance records during sessions, and walk in sessions. Regularly meet with supervisors for debriefing sessions.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate students must be registered/enrolled in a minimum of six (6) Fall/Spring units.
  • Post-baccalaureate students in a graduate program must be registered in a minimum of four (4) Fall/Spring units.

Nice To Haves

  • Must have declared major in Biology (or Undeclared with a Biology Interest if a Transfer), Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, or Physical Science.
