About The Position

The Peer Supporter brings a unique, non-traditional perspective that offers practical and emotional support and a sense of hope to individuals struggling with substance use challenges. This role will be based at Grand River Hospital and will provide support to those looking to access residential withdrawal management services. System navigation and timely access to care will be a primary focus for this position.

Requirements

Lived experience of substance use and recovery required; mental health recovery an asset
Post-secondary education in addictions, social services or related field
Experience providing support to individuals experiencing addiction / concurrent disorders
Front line experience providing crisis intervention and management, outreach services, and community-based supports
In depth knowledge and understanding of services available in the Waterloo Wellington Region
Valid G Driver’s License (G2 level or greater); Reliable vehicle and willing to transport clients
May be required to provide proof from Insurance provider of 1) at least $2 million in general liability and 2) have declared scope of vehicle use to Insurance provider
Standard First Aid/CPR Level C
Proof of Vaccination / Immunization status required pre-employment (Occupational Health requirement)
CSC Clearance conducted by PWGS Canada
Vulnerable Sector Screening Check (VSS) required pre-employment
Flexible schedule as required to support program delivery; Some evening work may be required on an occasional basis
Travel throughout Waterloo Wellington will be required

Responsibilities

Delivering support in a manner that is consistent with emerging best practice and that reflects key principles of the harm reduction and recovery-oriented approaches to care
Engaging in purposeful and deliberate sharing of your own lived experience of addiction/mental health recovery to facilitate the development of engagement, build relationships, and gain trust with program participants
Providing risk assessment and crisis assessment/intervention as required
Meet and connect with community members, build rapport, and create a comfortable and judgement-free atmosphere
Using a person-centered approach to provide participants with appropriate information on resources in the community
Working as part of the clinic team, support the participant process etc.
Work collaboratively with internal and external partners
Meeting and connecting with key community partner organizations to assist individuals that are supported navigate access to residential withdrawal management services
Making referrals, facilitating connections and providing information regarding primary care, addictions, and mental health supports within program parameters
Advocating on behalf of community residents, as appropriate, with other community service providers to enhance access to service
Participating in program reporting and development activities as required including program evaluation, data collection and input, process improvement, etc.
Participating and involvement in other programs, Addiction Services and broader agency activities
