About The Position

Open Door Group (ODG) is seeking a Peer Support Worker to join their team in Alberta. This mission-driven non-profit organization serves communities across Alberta and BC. The Peer Support Worker will play a vital role in the BRIDGE Program, a community-based employment initiative supporting individuals facing complex barriers to employment. The program utilizes a mobile outreach model embedded in social housing communities and services delivered at the Edmonton Employment Centre. The Peer Support Worker will provide practical, emotional, and social support to participants, using lived or living experience to build trust, strengthen engagement, and help participants achieve their goals related to life stability and employment readiness. This role involves working collaboratively with Case Managers.

Requirements

Minimum one year of recent, related experience supporting individuals experiencing mental health challenges, substance use, housing instability, or other complex barriers.
Demonstrated lived or living experience with mental health recovery, substance use recovery, homelessness, or housing transitions.
Ability to use lived experience intentionally, appropriately, and within professional boundaries in a peer role.
Knowledge of harm reduction, psychosocial rehabilitation, and trauma informed practice principles.
Knowledge of current social issues related to homelessness, mental health, and substance use.
Understanding of Disability, Equity, and Inclusion principles, the human rights code, and relevant legislation.
Demonstrated knowledge of community resources and service systems.
Strong crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills.
Ability to build trusting, respectful relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds and complex needs.
Demonstrated group facilitation skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic documentation systems, or ability to learn new systems quickly.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment.
Ability to work independently in outreach settings and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Peer Support Worker Certification
CPR and First Aid certification
Naloxone training
Satisfactory Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check
ASIST Suicide Intervention certification, or willingness to obtain
Mental Health First Aid, or willingness to obtain
Non Violent Crisis Intervention training, or willingness to obtain

Nice To Haves

A valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle are assets.
Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a reliable personal vehicle is an asset.

Responsibilities

Provides practical, emotional, and social support to participants navigating complex barriers.
Uses lived or living experience intentionally and ethically to build trust, strengthen engagement, and support participants in achieving individualized goals related to life stability and employment readiness.
Works collaboratively with Case Managers.
Delivers services in social housing communities and other community-based locations as part of a mobile outreach model.
Conducts work in community-based settings, including social housing sites, as well as at Open Door Group’s Edmonton Employment Centre.
Engages in both independent outreach work and collaboration within a team environment.
Facilitates groups or workshops.
Applies trauma-informed and recovery-oriented approaches in community-based settings.
Responds effectively and safely during crisis or high pressure situations.
Observes, assesses, and responds appropriately to changes in participant presentation.
Delivers clear, accessible information.
Documents work using electronic documentation systems.
