About The Position

This role involves applying person-centered principles and sharing lived experience to build supportive relationships with clients. The Peer Support Specialist will provide supportive contacts with clients who have developmental disabilities, severe and persistent mental illness, and chemical dependency. Responsibilities include carrying out portions of client treatment or training plans, responding to and deescalating crises, and working within a multi-disciplinary team. The role also involves documenting client progress, assisting with eligibility documentation, providing client activities, and meeting individually with clients in the community. Additionally, the specialist will manage time effectively, meet deadlines, maintain confidentiality, and comply with all relevant policies and regulations.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Two years of experience with individuals with severe or persistent chemical dependency, developmental disabilities, mental illness Or combination of education, work experience, and training
  • Must be able to obtain a certification as a Certified Peer Support Specialist – from a state-approved training within 6 months of hire.
  • Meet the definition of a Peer as defined by the State of Oregon Administrative Rule: Self-identified person currently or formerly receiving mental health services. Or A self-identified person in recovery from a substance abuse disorder, who meet the abstinence requirements for recovering staff in alcohol and other drug treatment programs. Or A family member of an individual who is a current or former recipient of addictions or mental health services.
  • Successful completion of background check
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to travel to other locations as necessary to complete essential job functions.
  • Must pass a Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) Criminal Background Check (to enter correctional setting)

Responsibilities

  • Provide supportive contacts with clients with developmental disabilities, severe and persistent mental illness, and chemical dependency.
  • Carry out portions of client treatment or training plans including skills training activities.
  • Respond appropriately to and deescalate a crisis.
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team in accordance with each client’s individualized treatment plan, needs, and concerns.
  • Document client progress per department policies and procedures.
  • Assist with obtaining eligibility documentation, providing client activities, and meeting individually with clients in the community.
  • Write short correspondence and memos.
  • Effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Manage time, meet deadlines, and remain calm and professional under pressure.
  • Maintain standards of confidentiality of Lifeways’ clients and records.
  • Perform all work duties and activities in compliance with Lifeway’s policies/procedures, Oregon Administrative Rules, OSHA and HIPAA regulations.
