About The Position

Peer Support Specialists will be expected to take the lead on engagement and may also conduct non-clinical assistance by providing support to consumers after the initial crisis has been resolved. Peer Specialists will be required to demonstrate competency in providing peer-to-peer support prior to rendering services independently. The 988 Program provides 24/7 mobile community outreach services to adults in crisis, including mental health, substance use, and suicidal emergencies. Staff dispatch to crises in teams of two, with a Crisis Response Specialist and a Peer Support Specialist, to provide assessment, risk assessment, safety planning, linkage to services, and follow-up care. The Program aims to provide crisis de-escalation without use of law enforcement unless necessary for consumer or team safety.

Requirements

  • Must be trained in crisis intervention.
  • At least 2 years of continuous recovery from an SMI or SUD diagnosis.
  • At least one year of field experience working with community individuals.
  • Must possess a certification from at least one of the following credentialing entities: Addiction Professional Certification Board as a Certified Recovery Support Practitioner (CRSP) or a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS), Mental Health Association in New Jersey as a Certified Recovery Support Practitioner (CRSP); NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals as a National Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (NCPRSS), Certified Wellness Coach, or Community Mental Health Associate certificate.
  • Driver's license must be in good standing, with no recent suspensions or violations of careless/reckless driving or excessive speeding of more than 20 MPH, and no more than 2 moving violations within the last 3 years.
