As a Peer Specialist, you provide support, encouragement, and guidance to individuals by drawing on your own lived experience with mental health or substance use challenges. You engage with individuals through active listening, sharing your recovery journey, and offering practical strategies for managing challenges and achieving personal goals. The role calls for strong communication and interpersonal skills, empathy, compassion, and a demonstrated commitment to your own recovery. You help individuals set and achieve their own goals, maintain high standards of personal conduct, and model the value of each person’s recovery experience. You share personal recovery stories, identify supports that promote recovery, and conduct yourself in a way that fosters your own recovery. You respect the confidentiality, rights, and dignity of the individuals served. You also advocate for recovery-based services, support individuals in making their own decisions, promote self-advocacy and stigma-busting, and encourage full integration in the community of each individual’s choice and the right to live in the least restrictive environment.
