About The Position

Join the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board as a part-time Peer Recovery Specialist I in Hampton, VA. In this onsite role, you will provide peer support and recovery services to individuals living with mental health and/or substance use challenges. This position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by helping individuals navigate their recovery journey while working as part of a supportive behavioral health team dedicated to compassionate, recovery-focused care. Since 1971, the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board has provided the highest quality of behavioral health services to residents of the cities of Hampton and Newport News, Virginia, offering a comprehensive array of programs for both children and adults living with mental illness, developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders.

Requirements

  • Must be an individual with personal lived experience of a mental health and/or substance use condition, with at least 12 months of successful recovery, including demonstrated progress in managing symptoms and building a meaningful life in recovery.
  • Valid state driver's license required.
  • Must complete the DBHDS 72-hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training within 6 months of hire.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal history fingerprint background investigation, DMV record check, Child Registry search, drug screening test and employment reference checks.

Responsibilities

  • Provide peer support and recovery-focused services to individuals receiving behavioral health treatment at our Crisis Stabilization and 23hr program.
  • Provide advocacy, daily living support, and monitoring.
  • Assist individuals with developing wellness and recovery goals.
  • Work closely with the treatment team in both individual and group settings.
  • Use lived experience to support and encourage recovery.
  • Help individuals utilize recovery tools such as Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) and other recovery planning resources to promote stability, independence, and personal growth.
