About The Position

Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center - Behavioral Health seeks to hire an experienced Peer Recovery Coach who will embrace our mission to extend God’s care through the ministry of physical, mental, and spiritual healing. This role involves conducting brief interventions for patients screening positive for alcohol and/or drug use, identifying their recovery needs, and assisting them in connecting with community support services and substance treatment. The Peer Recovery Coach will act as peer support throughout hospitalization and post-discharge, provide family members with recovery support materials, and conduct telephone outreach to assist with linkages and continued peer support. The position also requires modeling coping techniques, meeting productivity requirements, participating in trainings, attending meetings, completing documentation, and acting as a resource to the clinical team.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  • The candidate must be actively engaged in his/her own recovery program with a minimum of three years demonstrated personal recovery and sustained abstinence from alcohol and/or drug use.
  • For PHP roles, may accept mental health recovery experience in place of substance abuse recovery experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts brief interventions to patients that screen positive for alcohol and/or drug use.
  • Identifies patient’s history of drug/alcohol use, treatment history, motivation to change behavior and other needs for community support services.
  • Identifies patient’s readiness to change and use motivational interviewing techniques and other communication skills to support a plan for reducing or eliminating harmful drug and/or alcohol use.
  • Works with ED staff and social worker to identify community support services.
  • Assist patient and family with understanding how to utilize these community services.
  • Assists patients in linking to community support services and substance treatment services including securing appointment and transportation.
  • Acts as a peer support throughout the hospitalization and post-discharge, as appropriate to facilitate attainment of goals.
  • Provides family members with recovery support materials.
  • Provides telephone outreach to patients to assist with linkages and continued peer support.
  • Models coping techniques and self-help strategies.
  • Demonstrates ability to meet the productivity requirements set in accordance with program goals.
  • Participates in trainings to continually gain new skills.
  • Attends required staff and other meetings.
  • Completes required documentation and other reports.
  • Acts as a resource to other clinical team members on recovery support.
  • Consults with nursing staff, social work as requested, even if patient does not screen positive.
  • Notifies patient’s nurse before visiting the patient.
  • Telephones treatment providers to verify patient showed up for appointment; and follow-up by telephone with any patient that misses an appointment.
  • Demonstrates competencies for position within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Satisfactorily meets requirements of position during periodic and annual evaluations.
