About The Position

Under general supervision and in accordance with the policies, procedures and guidelines established within the organization, unit and the Nurse Practice Act, the Pediatric Transport Registered Nurse manages the care delivery for patients in out-of-hospital intra-facility transport and in-hospital throughout the length of stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Requirements

Diploma, Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required, and successful completion of Hospital Core and Department specific orientation based upon unit and experience level.
Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing with the State of Michigan.
As of December 29, 2013, any nurse hired by Bronson who does not hold a BSN (or higher nursing degree) will be given 8 years from date of hire date to obtain. If, after 8 years, the nurse has not met this requirement, employment will be terminated.
Critical care experience [in Pediatric Intensive Care (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and/or Emergency Department (ED)] required; 3 years or 4000 hours of critical care experience (in PICU, NICU, ICU or ED) preferred.
Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and/or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and other transport/department required provider courses upon hire.
Nursing transport specialty certification is required within two years of hire date [ex. Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN), Certified Neonatal/Pediatric Transport (CNPT)]. For all nurses who are currently in a pediatric transport nurse position and have been in a transport position for at least two years, nursing transport specialty certification is required by 12/31/2026.
Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment in order to set an appropriate plan of action.
Ability to operate required computer programs and Record assessment data, activities, and treatments in an accurate manner.
Must be able to communicate technical information and instructions to patients, families, and all members of the care delivery team.
Must demonstrate excellent human relation skills, including verbal and written communication, problem-solving and assertiveness.
Must be able to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary groups.

Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time.
Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.

Responsibilities

Assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and direct care for neonatal and/or pediatric patients during inter and intra-facility transport.
Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care for the physical, psychological, social, educational, and safety needs of the patients served.
Attend trainings required by the pediatric transport role and department assigned.
Maintain competencies required by policies, regulations and/or accreditations related to the pediatric transport role and department assigned.
Maintain competencies and perform advanced skills as required by the transport role and as assigned.
Participate in the education of regional referral staff, patients, parents, and Bronson Methodist Hospital and Bronson Children’s Hospital staff.
The registered nurse collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patients’ health or the situation.
Assesses the patient’s physical and developmental needs.
Analyzes assessment data to identify appropriate patient needs.
Documents nursing history and age appropriate physical/emotional needs/strengths for assigned patients.
Reviews vital signs to assess condition of patient and detect deviations from normal.
The registered nurse analyzes the assessment data to determine patient problems or issues.
Uses the assessment data to identify patient problems.
Confirms problems with patient and family when appropriate.
Documents the expected outcomes and plan of care related to the problems through use of the clinical pathway and outcome teaching record.
The registered nurse identified expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient.
Utilizes the patient/family input when defining outcomes. Incorporates the patient values, ethical and cultural considerations.
Coordinates discharge planning for outcomes not achieved utilizing the continuum of care available.
The registered nurse develops a plan that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.
Incorporates clinical pathways into the plan when appropriate.
Develops individualized interventions with patient input when appropriate.
Considers data from other members of the healthcare team when developing the plan of care.
