About The Position

Blythedale Children’s Hospital is an independent children’s specialty hospital in New York State. Our multidisciplinary team provides critical care to patients with complex medical conditions. We partner with academic medical centers in the Northeast Corridor of the United States to admit patients to our state-of-the-art 118-bed facility. Our experts integrate clinical expertise and health education in our on-site simulation rooms to provide extensive parent training to get our patients home safely. The Per diem Pediatric Respiratory Therapy Supervisor supports the oversight of daily clinical operations of the Respiratory Therapy department. This role ensures that life-sustaining treatments are delivered safely, staff are appropriately allocated and clinical protocols remain at the forefront of pediatric medicine. You will serve as the bridge between frontline therapists and hospital administration. This role will also support ongoing education needs of the RT department. This position reports to the Director of Respiratory Therapy. This is an onsite position variable hours based upon departmental needs.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of clinical pediatric experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in respiratory therapy or health administration from an accredited university in the US.
  • Standing, walking, stooping.
  • Ability to transfer children and equipment.
  • Ability to meet flexible scheduling demands and patient care needs.
  • Maintains required licensure/certifications and completes mandatory education; comply with hospital policies, HIPAA, and infection control requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Preceptor, Lead or Charge Respiratory Therapy experience helpful.
  • Proficiency in Meditech/Expanse helpful
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the subject matter expert for pediatric respiratory modalities, the ventilator fleet and supportive respiratory therapies utilized at BCH including but not limited to: cough assist, HFCWO(High Frequency Chest Wall Oscillation technology) and Oscillation and Lung Expansion Therapy (VOLARA).
  • Assists with equipment readiness (ventilators, oxygen delivery devices, aerosol therapy devices) by coordinating checks, preventive maintenance workflows, and troubleshooting with Biomedical/Facilities.
  • Manages, assigns and adjusts staffing based on census, acuity, and skill mix; coordinates break coverage and on-call needs.
  • Supports staff performance management by coaching, providing educational sessions, tracking competencies, and addressing attendance and conduct issues in accordance with policy.
  • Monitors quality and regulatory compliance, including documentation standards, infection prevention practices, ventilator-associated event prevention measures, and Joint Commission readiness.
  • As directed by Director of RT: Conducts rounding and chart reviews; identifies trends, initiates corrective actions, and reports quality metrics and variances to the Director.
  • Promotes a culture of safety by reporting events/near misses, participating in root cause analyses, and implementing action plans.
  • Maintains required licensure/certifications and completes mandatory education; comply with hospital policies, HIPAA, and infection control requirements.
  • Serves as clinical resource and escalation point for complex pediatric cases; collaborates with physicians, nursing, and the interdisciplinary team on care plans.
  • Responds to emergencies (e.g., Code Blue/Rapid Response), providing airway management and directing RT response as indicated.
  • May participate in supporting orientation for new hires and provides ongoing training on new respiratory technology or evidence-based protocols, provide simulation and skills-based training to maintain pediatric competencies.
  • Ensures clinical competency across modalities (including invasive/noninvasive ventilation, airway clearance therapies, tracheostomy and ventilator care, and emergency airway support).
  • May support patient/family education, interdisciplinary care-plan meetings, and discharge planning to support safe transitions of care.
