About The Position

This is a full-time academic position focused on providing direct patient care and teaching pediatric pulmonary medicine to medical students and residents. The role involves patient care, teaching responsibilities, and administrative duties within the SIU School of Medicine.

Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited medical school program
  • Successful completion of an approved residency program
  • Eligible for licensure in the State of Illinois
  • Demonstrated potential, interest, and/or ability for effectiveness in teaching, service, and/or research
  • Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations
  • Board eligible for certification in Pediatric Pulmonology by the American Board of Pediatrics

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and teach medical students rotating on inpatient and outpatient pulmonary services.
  • Complete feedback evaluations for supervised students.
  • Review and write questions for educational endeavors and simulated patient exams.
  • Develop goals and objectives for a 4th-year medical student elective.
  • Develop and implement teaching responsibilities and curriculum for 3rd-year medical students.
  • Facilitate resident rotation, including maintaining rotation descriptions, creating schedules, providing precepting and teaching, maintaining resource lists, and completing resident evaluations.
  • Participate in resident core conferences (minimum 4 per year).
  • Attend Resident Research Day and the Annual Program Evaluation Meeting.
  • Assist in assessing education needs for Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine and developing programs.
  • Facilitate formal nursing education programs in the Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine Clinic.
  • Create patient education materials.
  • Develop and update triage nurse protocols.
  • Grant interviews for media for patient education and public enlightenment.
  • Serve as a role model for faculty, house staff, and students.
  • Participate in continuing education programs for clinical faculty and practicing physicians.
  • Participate in the Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine on-call schedule.
  • Provide consultative pediatric pulmonary medicine inpatient service.
  • Maintain an outpatient clinical practice in pediatric pulmonary medicine, averaging 4.5 half-day sessions per week, including outpatient visits and procedures (bronchoscopy, bronchoalveolar lavage, PFT interpretation, cardiopulmonary exercise testing).
  • Be on campus 3 days per week.
  • Develop written guidelines for continuity and quality patient care in the clinic.
  • Provide consultation and patient care under the SIU HealthCare’s URO Plan.
  • Adhere to SIU HealthCare’s Standards of Service, compliance, patient satisfaction, and provider communication.
  • Serve as an advocate for programs and services improving children's health in central and southern Illinois.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives.
  • Participate in research activities.
  • Serve as director for the pediatric cystic fibrosis care clinic.
  • Regularly attend Pediatric Grand Rounds, Journal Club, Resident Rounds, and M&M Conferences.
  • Present at Grand Rounds annually.
  • Represent the Department of Pediatrics on committees.
  • Attend national meetings and symposia in pediatric pulmonary medicine.
  • Serve on the Residents Recruitment Committee, assisting with evaluations, interviews, and developing a rank list.
  • Attend departmental faculty and division meetings.
  • Maintain and update licenses/required certifications.
