About The Position

This role is for a Pediatric Emergency Department Critical Care Tech at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. The position is full-time, 0.9 FTE, working 36 hours per week on the night shift (7p-7a), including rotating holidays and every other weekend. The tech will assist Emergency Department (ED) and Critical Care (CC) staff RNs and/or physicians by performing technical, direct patient care skills. This includes operating various medical equipment, interpreting cardiac rhythms, performing point-of-care testing, collecting specimens, assisting with patient care and discharge, transporting patients, and maintaining communication and supplies within the department. The role requires a commitment to patient safety, continuous learning, and adherence to hospital policies and procedures. Requirements

  • Certified as CNA, EMT, paramedic, or ERT with 2-3 years of hospital or pre-hospital patient care experience OR acceptance at an accredited medical school OR completion of 2-3 years of nursing school clinical rotations OR completion of a certified medical assisting program.
  • Customer Focus Skills.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • CNA, EMT, ERT, MA certification.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Ability to successfully complete hospital-based training for Patient Care Assistant.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts any day of the week; Including holidays.
  • Willing to be called off based on unit demands.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise clinical competence in skills and follow clinical procedures based on hospital policy.
  • Assist in setting up and safely operate various equipment (ie. hypothermia blanket, Bair Hugger, EKG machine, cardiac monitor, pulse oximeter, glucometer, scale, etc.) as requested.
  • Correctly interpret cardiac rhythms/dysrhythmias.
  • Perform quality control checks for point of care tests, perform point of care testing as assigned.
  • Perform basic pulse oximetry and incentive spirometry, discontinuance of standby oxygen.
  • Collect and label specimens appropriately utilizing techniques as defined by established policy.
  • Document in ER Information System.
  • Properly apply soft and leather restraints and posey vests.
  • Assist in completing restraint record by documenting toileting, feeding, repositioning of patient per policy.
  • Perform CPR according to AHA guidelines.
  • Perform courier duties to and from ancillary department (ie. transporting of equipment, supplies, specimens, charts, belongings, etc.) to or from the appropriate places to facilitate smooth department functioning.
  • Accompany non-telemetry and telemetry ED patients deemed "stable" by RN and MD to special procedures and CT scan.
  • Appropriately label patient belongings.
  • Insert foley catheters.
  • Assist nurses with patient care and discharge (ie. dressings, lifting, changing linens, answering lights, toileting, etc.).
  • Provide AM or PM care, including bed bath, or set-up, oral and denture care, shave, back rub and skin care.
  • Perform post-mortem care.
  • Transport non-telemetry patients to ancillary departments and assigned unit beds.
  • Transport telemetry patients deemed "stable" by RN and MD to the assigned unit bed.
  • Assist RNs with transfer of "unstable" telemetry patients to the assigned unit bed or other departments for diagnostic testing.
  • Communicate accurate, complete information regarding patient and procedural data to the RN and/or MD.
  • Promote patient safety by reporting of issues through established channels and participating as requested in safety initiatives.
  • Document performance of skills and patient data accurately and concisely on the patient record.
  • Communicate regarding broken, missing or damaged ED equipment to the Inventory Clerk for replacement or repair.
  • Label malfunctioning portable equipment and take it to the Inventory Clerk.
  • Post appropriate signage on malfunctioning fixed equipment and report such to the Inventory Clerk.
  • Order appropriate departmental supplies that are assigned as a responsibility (ie. linen, stock nourishments).
  • Clean and refurnish rooms with linen.
  • Replace supplies to Basic Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics in the absence of the Inventory Clerk.
  • Ensure all ED hallways are clear.
  • Clean reusable equipment.
  • Aid in transport to central sterilization as needed.
  • Organize and clean storage areas, as needed.
  • Prioritize tasks appropriately.
  • Utilize appropriate resources as necessary.
  • Function according to established policies and procedures.
  • Self-initiate work assignment.
  • Maintain required professional certifications.
  • Attend 50% of department meetings/in-services.
  • Read and sign off on 100% of all meeting minutes when absent from meeting.
  • Participate in the orientation of other staff members by acting in a preceptor role and by sharing experiences and knowledge, which assist others in the ED to learn.
  • Correctly explain procedures to patient and significant others.
  • Adhere to established policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to established safety practices.
  • Support/participate in unit goal formation.
  • Measure and record all intake and output.
  • Answer patient call lights promptly and follow up to ensure needs of the patient and significant others are met.
  • Document on ED Tracking Log.
  • Weigh and measure height of patients, document in ED Information System.
