About The Position

The University of New Mexico (UNM) School of Medicine Department of Dermatology in Albuquerque seeks a qualified enthusiastic individual for a full-time academic faculty position as a Pediatric Dermatologist. We serve a large, truly diverse, and medically complex patient population. As the only academic health center/flagship institution for the entire state, we are the consultative resource for Dermatology in New Mexico (population 2.1 million) and also serve the Four Corners region of the Southwest. Our population is uniquely multicultural and multilingual, with 22 American Indian tribes and nations (11-12% census population as of 2021) as well as vibrant Hispanic/Latinx (50%), African American (3%), and Asian American (2%) communities. Due to low numbers of practicing specialists in rural areas, our faculty and trainees see the entire spectrum of clinical dermatology, including but not limited to: general and pediatric dermatology, Mohs surgery/cutaneous oncology, dermatopathology, aesthetics, and complex inpatient/medical dermatology. Our main UNM Hospital clinical site offers phototherapy and lasers, and the Department/training program has a strong partnership with the local VA Medical Center as well. Our Chair is currently the only fellowship-trained pediatric dermatologist in the state, so the opportunities for a (junior) faculty to gain extensive experience quickly and effectively, while being mentored and meaningfully contributing to care for children in this region, is truly extraordinary. At the UNM Department of Dermatology, we pride ourselves in our excellence and commitment to all mission areas, training residents to practice at their highest level and offering robust clinical exposure, high-quality education/professional development, research opportunities and a longstanding dedication to community engagement and diversity/equity/inclusivity and belonging. The ACGME-accredited residency program is currently allotted 3 residents/year, supervised by approximately 10 faculty, including UNM-based, VAMC and Dermatopathology. The UNM School of Medicine actively engages in educational innovation initiatives towards improving equity and inclusion in the physician workforce. As such, preferable candidate attributes include: Demonstrable experience promoting inclusion in the workforce, Knowledge and modelling of cultural humility, Commitment to guiding learners from underrepresented groups, and Commitment to understanding and utilizing social determinants of health to address health disparities for individuals and communities. Additional training and expertise (such as in Dermatopathology, Internal Medicine-Dermatology or Mohs surgery) would also be welcome. Faculty appointment (Assistant/Associate/Professor; Clinician Educator track vs tenure track) and compensation will be commensurate with experience. We welcome your interest in our vibrant program!
