A practitioner with a level of knowledge, skills, and experience in dietetics practice necessary to be proficient as a Registered Dietitian professional, demonstrating consistent excellence and empowering others to grow and improve their skills. A proficient practitioner is a Registered Dietitian who is generally 3 or more years beyond credentialing and entry into the profession, consistently provides safe and reliable service, has obtained operational job performance skills, and is successful in their clinical area of focus or specialty. The proficient practitioner demonstrates additional knowledge, skills, judgment, and experience in pediatric nutrition and dietetics practice. Primary responsibilities include direct patient care through application of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) including completion of nutrition assessment, determination of nutrition diagnoses, development of nutrition-focused evidence-based interventions, and nutrition monitoring and evaluation; provides nutrition counseling and education to patients/caregivers. The proficient Registered Dietitian possesses advanced skills across multiple clinical areas, including expertise in diverse patient care settings or specialized knowledge in a high-acuity care area. This RD demonstrates strong communication abilities and confidently advocates for patients and nutrition therapy within the interdisciplinary team and the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in dietetics or nutrition Required or a similar degree with completed dietetic internship and achievement of active credentialing through the Commission on Dietetic Registration Required
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Registered Dietitian Required
  • Knowledge of the principles of human and pediatric nutrition. (Medium proficiency)
  • Knowledge of pediatric nutritional requirements specific to all populations served at Children’s and ability to access appropriate reference values. (Medium proficiency)
  • Knowledge of clinical medical nutrition therapy principles and practices. (High proficiency)
  • Knowledge of medical terminology. (Medium proficiency)
  • Ability to participate in Quality Improvement (QI) projects within the organization. (Medium proficiency)
  • Ability to formulate nutrition interventions and demonstrate high level problem solving and clinical judgment involving medical nutrition therapy. (High proficiency)
  • Must be experienced in utilizing computer; to include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power point), internet, EMR and other facility required software applications. (Medium proficiency)
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision. (High proficiency)
  • Ability to utilize various software programs to retrieve nutritional information. (High proficiency)
  • Must possess excellent communication, organizational, leadership and interpersonal skills. (Medium proficiency)
  • Ability to conduct education and training sessions with clinical nutrition staff, medical staff, nursing and other staff within the organization. (Medium proficiency)
  • Current and valid licensure by the state of Nebraska as a licensed medical nutrition therapist (LMNT) Required
  • REG DIET - Dietitian – Registered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) Required

Responsibilities

  • Meets the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics published "Scope and Standards of Practice for the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist" and "Standards of Practice and Standards of Professional Performance for Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (Competent, Proficient, and Expert) in Pediatric Nutrition.
  • Demonstrates a broad range of advanced nutrition assessment skills to evaluate multiple patient populations and high acuity/complexity across service-lines.
  • Advanced MNT skill demonstration and competent in solving complex problems.
  • Provides direct patient care through application of the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) including completion of nutrition assessment, determination of nutrition diagnoses, development of nutrition-focused evidence-based interventions, and nutrition monitoring and evaluation; provides nutrition counseling and education to patients/caregivers.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform nutrition-focused physical exam (NFPE) when indicated/appropriate; mentors and trains team members on utilization of NFPE.
  • Documentation meets policy requirements and includes ADIME (assessment, diagnosis, intervention, monitoring and evaluation) data.
  • May participate in and collaborate on case management tasks and supports continuity of care that extends beyond the clinic/hospital boundaries.
  • Proficient skills in nutrition support therapy regarding enteral and parenteral nutrition MNT.
  • Demonstrates order writing skills for oral nutrition supplements, enteral nutrition, and parenteral nutrition.
  • May obtain approval for parenteral nutrition order writing privileges by first meeting the requirements described in the Department Operation Standards for Registered Dietitian Nutritionists, Lactation Consultants, and Nutrition Technicians and requires annual skills competency review.
  • Obtains, reviews and utilizes evidenced-based best practices to improve patient outcomes.
  • Presents present journal articles, case studies and new research to clinical dietitians.
  • Serves as a nutrition expert within the organization and for the community by providing education through presentations, participating in journal clubs, participating in speaking opportunities outside the organization, providing interviews and other opportunities as requested.
  • Assists in the development of and review of clinical nutrition-related protocols, pathways, and guidelines.
  • Maintains quantitative measures required by the Joint Commission, local, state, and federal regulatory agencies including state licensure, credentialing registration, and attainment of required CEUs.
  • Reviews policies and procedures related to clinical nutrition intra- and interdepartmentally, including research-based nutrition therapy practice guidelines.
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.
