The Burn Care Specialist Nurse (Pediatric) reports to the Pediatric Critical Care Manager under the general supervision of the Burn Program Manager. This role is responsible for assisting in burn wound care for all burn patients as an adjunct to the bedside burn nurse and the patient care tech. The specialist will work as a team on a daily basis to create a daily wound care schedule. They will primarily assist the nurse in the Pediatric ICU but will also provide coverage for adult patients in the Surgical Trauma Burn Intensive Care Unit (STBICIU) and 6W. Additionally, they will provide wound care to patients on other units due to medical condition or bed unavailability in the STBICU, 6W, or PICU. The role involves collaborating with other team members to coordinate wound care for all burn patients, assisting in the care of patients on the burn service and those consulted by the team. This includes organizing a daily wound care schedule, coordinating with nurses and anesthesiologists for hydrotherapy schedules, and collaborating with the nurse caring for the burn patient on daily wound care and dressing changes. The specialist will also provide ongoing wound care education for nurses and participate in burn team meetings. Communication with the multidisciplinary team, patient, and family is key, including attending AM rounds, communicating with bedside nurses on dressing change schedules, informing the provider team of wound appearance changes, updating the multidisciplinary team on patient status, and educating patients and families on burn wounds and dressings. Other duties as assigned by the Program Manager are also part of this role.
