About The Position

Saint Joseph Mercy Health System (SJMHS) is a leading healthcare provider in Southeastern Michigan, part of Trinity Health, a national Catholic health system. The 1 East unit is a locked and secured 24-bed unit serving patients aged 18 through older adults. This unit provides services for patients experiencing life-threatening and/or severely incapacitating symptoms, with a potential for serious harm to self or others. Patients are admitted through the Psychiatric Access department in the Emergency Department at SJMHS, often requiring face-to-face assessments, or may be transfers or direct admissions from other locations. The PCT, under the direction of a registered nurse, is responsible for direct patient care, considering age-specific, developmental, cultural, and spiritual needs. They contribute to maintaining a clean, safe, and supportive patient and family environment, incorporating relationship-based care concepts. The unit is described as a locked 36-bed secured unit, which may be a discrepancy from the initial 24-bed mention.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of one year of previous direct care experience (acute or long term) or successful completion of CENA, PCT, MA, or EMT course.
  • Student nurses must have completed their nursing fundamentals class of a BSN program.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients in completing ADLs including: Bathing, showering, toileting, positioning, turning, transferring, ambulation using assistive devices and with feeding and menu selection.
  • Collect and send specimens including blood and blood cultures.
  • Insert and remove peripheral IV catheters.
  • Record patient information and required data in appropriate areas to meet documentation requirements.
  • Provide direct patient care considering age-specific, developmental, cultural and spiritual needs.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining a patient care environment that is clean, safe and conducive to patient/family wellbeing including concepts of relationship-based care.
