About The Position

The PCT will perform a variety of technical tasks and bedside functions, with daily activities coordinated by the Registered Nurse (RN). Responsibilities include direct patient care such as hygiene, skin care, mobility, and monitoring. The PCT is expected to manage equipment and perform or assist in all procedures on the unit, including EKGs. The incumbent is expected to perform other similar and related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Provides age-appropriate care to patients, demonstrating knowledge of developmental stages and applying developmental theories and concepts.
  • Monitors basic physiological parameters, taking and recording routine vital signs, weights/heights, abdominal girths, and head circumference as per physician/nurse order. Consistently reports significant deviations in vital signs and changes in patient's normal drainage pattern immediately.
  • Administers treatments and procedures per Baystate Health System policy/procedure, including changing dressings, providing post-mortem care, and performing procedures outlined in the nursing procedure manual. Assists physicians with exams and simple procedures, ensuring patient identity by checking the identification bracelet and band before any procedure.
  • Assists patients with the elimination of body wastes by offering bedpans, urinals, and emesis basins promptly. Accurately labels and sends specimens of urine, feces, and sputum within the specified timeframe. Accurately measures and records intake and output per established policy. Administers enemas or Harris Drips as ordered per established procedure.
  • If applicable, performs Point of Care (POC) testing.
  • Assists in the delivery of ancillary services as directed, following specified treatment plans, monitoring patient's condition during treatment, and notifying appropriate personnel of unexpected occurrences. Provides information to RN based on observations during patient-related care and documents treatments and activities consistently.
  • Communicates effectively with the team and patients, interacting respectfully and informatively, communicating patient care information, and recognizing culturally based patient and family needs.
  • Is knowledgeable of and initiates emergency procedures, responding effectively in emergencies, maintaining patient safety, and communicating effectively with appropriate personnel.
  • Functions as a member of the team by assisting team members with clinical and non-clinical activities and providing feedback related to the team process.
  • Competencies and completion and maintenance of clinical recognition program for career ladder level.
  • Demonstrates competency for one-to-one observation of patients based on department and unit-specific needs.
  • Demonstrates competency in performing EKG based on department and unit-specific needs.
