The PCA (Patient Care Assistant) role involves providing approved care to assigned patients and assisting in the implementation of interventions under the supervision of an RN. This includes supervising and assisting patients with activities of daily living and developmentally appropriate activities. The PCA also offers assistance to co-workers after completing their own duties, uses crisis control techniques, and assists in de-escalation of patients and visitors. They may also assist with patient transport and 1 on 1 patient observation as needed. In terms of communication, the PCA demonstrates Cincinnati Children's CARES behaviors in all interactions, reports patient status changes, and completes timely documentation in the patient medical record. They are encouraged to seek information and guidance when needed and discuss concerns with their Director or designee. For the environment, the PCA ensures that all areas are organized and present a safe, accessible, effective, and efficient environment for patients, families, visitors, and employees. They must comply with Infection Control policies and procedures and adhere to safety procedures appropriate to children's ages and developmental levels. Administrative support includes responding to communication system/patient alarms with urgency, answering the telephone according to CCHMC etiquette, assembling charts, ordering patient and clerical supplies, and potentially assisting in the orientation and training of new employees.
