About The Position

Personal Care Attendants assist senior adults who are functionally, physically, and/or socially impaired. The Personal Care Attendant’s role is to assist residents with those activities of daily living that they are unable to perform without help, fostering at all times residents’ independence and freedom of choice. All responsibilities will be conducted in a manner that is consistent with the philosophy of St. James Place (SJP). In addition to all responsibilities of a PCA, the PCA Team Leader serves as a mentor to the PCA staff, providing guidance and motivation and ensuring the quality of care to the residents. May perform duties specific to certain shifts in order to enhance performance of the PCA staff. The PCA Team Leader/Scheduler will ensure staff scheduling and shifts are adequately covered.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Previous experience with personal care in a healthcare or home care setting
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment)
  • Basic computer usage skills; ability to learn software programs related to position

Responsibilities

  • Ensure morning care is fulfilled, including toileting at designated time.
  • Monitor dining room settings as well as serving.
  • Mentor PCA staff; lead by example.
  • Ensure that shifts are adequately staffed; schedule and communicate staffing assignments.
  • Handle call-ins and coordinate replacement coverage; when unable to secure replacement PCA coverage, PCA Team Leader/Scheduler may be required to work the PCA assignment.
  • Encourage activity participation by issuing a personal invitation to the residents.
  • Refresh hydration stations at the beginning of each 8-hour shift.
  • Attend outings with residents, including doctor appointments.
  • Remain visible at all times to assist where needed.
  • Maintain order and professionalism of staff throughout the shift.
  • Report staffing issues or resident care issues to a member of management.
  • Provide assistance with dressing and undressing.
  • Provide assistance with bathing.
  • Provide assistance with personal hygiene.
  • Provide assistance with mobility devices (cane, walker, wheelchair, crutches) including monitoring of safe transfer and ambulation techniques.
  • Care for ADL devices such as eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids and dentures.
  • Provide assistance with telephone (assists with calls, telephone repairs, hearing and vision adaptive skills).
  • Provide assistance with housekeeping tasks associated with personal care such as washing dishes, bed making, cleaning bathroom and linen/towel changes, as well as doing resident’s personal laundry.
  • Assist residents with self-administration of medications.
  • Monitor medication supplies and documentation.
  • Assist with escorting residents to the Dining Room for meals.
  • Assist with preparing the Dining Room for meals (setting tables, clearing tables, cleaning dining room & dishes when necessary).
  • Assist with taking meal orders and waiting tables during mealtimes.
  • Assist with planning and preparing for activities.
  • Assist with reminding and escorting residents to activities.
  • Participate in scheduled and unscheduled activities.
  • Assist with clean up after scheduled activities.
  • Observe and report changes in resident’s physical condition and cognitive/emotional status to the Director of AL or Wellness Nurse.
  • Conduct room checks and resident rounds.
  • Monitor for environmental safety hazards.
  • Report and record incidents, errors, or accidents.
  • Report and record resident and resident-related events.
  • Promote residents’ social, physical and emotional wellbeing.
  • Demonstrate and reflect the mission and values of St. James Place.
  • May participate in the interview process for new staff; assist with training and orientation of new employees and ensure that training is documented.
  • Plan and complete duties with minimal direction from supervisor.
  • Work collaboratively with peers and other team members.
  • Use tactful, diplomatic communication techniques at all times.
  • Follow up with appropriate staff, residents, or other individuals regarding reported complaints, problems, and concerns, and communicate these to the Director of AL.
  • Act as ambassador and public relations representative to guests and other off-campus visitors.
